District Update

from Fire Chief Jeffery M. Keefe

As we head into the fall season, our members remain busy both in the community and behind the scenes. In addition to responding to more than 3,900 calls for service each year, our crews spend significant time training, conducting public education, and preparing for the wide range of emergencies we may be called to handle. That includes upcoming aircraft rescue and firefighting training at DuPage Airport, where the District provides full-time ARFF services, as well as continued fire, EMS, special operations, and company-level training throughout the District.

One of the things I enjoy most about this time of year is the opportunity to connect with the community outside of an emergency. Our annual Open House will be held on Saturday, September 26, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Station 6, 200 Fremont Street. This is always a great opportunity for residents and families to meet our firefighters and paramedics, see our equipment, learn more about the services we provide, and spend some time with us in a relaxed setting. I look forward to seeing familiar faces, meeting new residents, and welcoming everyone to the firehouse.

Special Safety Message

October 4 – 10 is nationally known as “Fire Prevention Week”. The week is intended to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 (click the yellow highlight to learn more about its history) and to remind people to practice fire safety. Each year, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) sets a theme for the week, with the 2026 theme being “Charge into Fire Safety - Safe Charging is a Superpower”. It is a reminder to use rechargeable lithium-ion batteries safely.

Smoke Detector Facts

  • Did you know that smoke detectors need to be replaced every 10 years? Illinois law requires that replacement smoke detectors must be 10-year sealed battery types.
  • How do I check the date on my detectors? The manufacturer date should be stamped on the back - 10 years from that date.

  • How many smoke detectors are required? The law requires 1 detector per level of the home and 1 within 15 feet of sleeping areas.
  • Are there different types of detectors? Yes - the two types are ionization and photoelectric. Check out this video: Detector Types

Injury Prevention Reminder

As fall approaches, gutters will need to be cleaned and trees trimmed. It is important to remember that ladders pose an injury risk if not used properly. Injuries from falls off of ladders include fractures, electrocutions, and head/back injuries. Always make sure that the ladder you are using is secure, stable, and clear of overhead obstructions such as electrical lines.

Disaster Readiness Post

When disaster strikes, one of the greatest challenges that can arise is the ability/inability to communicate with family and friends. It is critical that you create a communication plan so that re-connection can occur if you are separated. Click on this helpful link for a template: COMMUNICATION PLAN

Additionally, click the images on the left for FREE communication technology tools to share information with Ducomm, our 9-1-1 center, and to help locate family and friends.

Quick Fact

The Fire District provides advanced life support (paramedic) services throughout the District using both ambulances and firefighting vehicles. All vehicles are equipped to deliver emergency medical care, and all District front-line personnel are licensed as Paramedics. The District responds to approximately 3900 calls for service per year, with 63% being emergency medical-related.
