District Update Things are busy here at the Fire District as we gear up for the summer season. Our members are in our “training season,” using these nice weather days to get a lot of training done to help us better prepare for all types of emergencies. We have also been collaborating with our community partners at the schools, where we are completing building familiarization tours, and at the park district, where we have partnered with the lifeguards for training and support of the 10M Swim Lesson program.

Our Board of Trustees has worked diligently to adopt the Fiscal Year (FY) 2026 budget. The Fire District’s budget runs from June 1st to May 31st each year. The FY 2026 budget has increased slightly to offset operational expenses while maintaining a balanced budget within the approved levy. Capital funds have been allocated for several planned projects, including replacing the parking lot at Fire Station #6 (200 Fremont Street) and purchasing an ambulance for our Fleet Replacement program.

We are excited to welcome a new candidate firefighter to our ranks who is a replacement for a vacancy created by a previous retirement and promotion. You will see the new member and the rest of our firefighters in the district at many public events over the summer. Please say hello, and feel free to ask them any questions that you may have. We look forward to seeing everyone at our Open House in September. Have a safe summer!

Special Safety Message

July 4th is right around the corner, and the Fire District would like to remind the community that the sale, possession, and discharge of consumer FIREWORKS is illegal in the West Chicago Fire Protection District/City of West Chicago. Each year, thousands of injuries occur, and properties are extensively damaged due to the discharge of consumer fireworks. The best way to prevent injuries and damage is to leave the fireworks to the professionals

Seasonal Safety News

Summer is our time to get outdoors and enjoy the sun and fun, including getting in the water to cool off or riding bikes around town. To help keep our community members safe, the Fire District would like to share some tips on safe bike riding and water safety.

Injury Prevention Reminder

After being cooped up inside during the cold weather months, we all look for ways to enjoy the sun and warmth. If we are not careful during this time, injuries and even death can occur from heat exposure. To help protect community members, here are a few safety reminders regarding heat-related conditions.

Disaster Readiness Post

Did you know that lightning is hotter than the surface of the Sun and can reach temperatures around 50,000 degrees Fahrenheit?  It is never safe to be outdoors when lightning is close by. Each year in the United States, approximately 300 people are struck by lightning. The saying goes, “When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors”. Check out the National Weather Service website for more information - click below:

Quick Fact

West Chicago Fire Protection District protects the community with an extensive fleet of vehicles. A highly specialized vehicle known as a “Squad” is part of the fleet. The Squad's primary responsibility is transporting highly specialized rescue and hazardous materials equipment to emergency scenes.

Some of the equipment includes hydraulic rescue tools to free victims trapped in vehicle crashes, rope equipment for industrial rescues, and chemical protective suits for entering hazardous environments. Squad 7, the vehicle, is housed at Fire Station 7 (1080 Commerce) for its proximity to our industrial park, major roadways, and the airport, along with response to the entire District.

The current cost for a new Squad is around $1.5 million, and the build timeframe is up to four years. Squad 7 will be due for replacement in 2032. Because of the limited purchasing market and uniqueness of these fire service vehicles, the vehicles must be custom-built.
