Warning From the Lake County Sheriff
|
|
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office has become aware someone is calling Lake County residents and ‘spoofing’ the telephone number to make it appear as if the call is coming from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office (847-377-4000). The caller claims to be an employee with the sheriff’s office and tells the recipient that they have an active arrest warrant. The caller then demands the recipient obtain gift cards to avoid being arrested on the warrant. Remember, if someone you don’t know is demanding payment in the form of gift cards it’s a scam! Please share this information with family and friends.

Mosquitos Test Positive for West Nile Virus
|
|
A mosquito “pool” (batch of mosquitoes) sampled on June 4, 2020 in Hawthorn Woods, Illinois has tested positive for West Nile virus. This mosquito pool is the first confirmed indicator of West Nile virus presence in Lake County in 2020.
Practice the “4 Ds of Defense” to protect yourself and your family from mosquitoes:
- Drain: Drain standing water from items around your home, yard, and business.
- Defend: When outdoors, use an insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, 2-undecanone, or IR3535 and reapply according to label directions.
- Dawn and Dusk: Protect yourself all day and night, and wear repellent outdoors during these prime times for mosquito activity.
- Dress: Wear long sleeves, pants, and closed toe shoes when outdoors to cover your skin.
The Lake County Health Department’s Mosquito Surveillance Program coordinates mosquito trapping results throughout Lake County. Mosquitoes are tested weekly for West Nile virus. The program also monitors reports of dead birds (an early sign of the presence of the virus) and investigates areas of stagnant water for the presence of mosquito larvae, specifically from the Culex mosquito, which is the primary carrier of West Nile in Illinois.
In 2019, 61 pools or batches of mosquitoes tested positive for West Nile virus. Since 2002, there have been 73 confirmed human cases of West Nile virus in Lake County, as well as four confirmed deaths.
Most people infected with West Nile virus have no symptoms of illness. However, some may become ill usually 3 to 15 days after the bite of an infected mosquito. Common symptoms include fever, nausea, headache and muscle ache. In some individuals, severe illness including meningitis or encephalitis, or even death, can occur. People older than 50 and individuals with weakened immune systems are at higher risk for severe illness from West Nile virus.

Residents can also call the Health Department’s West Nile hotline to report areas of stagnant water, report locations of dead birds, and obtain more information on the signs and symptoms of West Nile virus. The West Nile hotline number is (847) 377-8300.

Automatic Renewal of Exemptions
In response to the Covid-19 crisis, the State has enacted legislation to automatically renew exemptions for tax year 2020. The automatic renewals will be granted for the Senior Assessment Freeze, Disabled Persons, Disabled Veterans exemptions.
If a taxpayer had any of the exemptions in place for tax year 2019, then the exemption will automatically be granted for tax year 2020. Taxpayers do not need to renew or file for this year. If a taxpayer has already submitted an application or renewal for 2020, no further action is required.
The only instance where an application must be made is for first time applicants or if there has been a change to or in the Disabled Veterans disability rating.
Lake County will be mailing notices to those taxpayers who are impacted.
Fremont Township residents with questions should call my office at 847 223-2846.
