Update: West Pokot Catastrophic Flooding and Destruction
After months of waiting and many efforts to reach the isolated and devastated regions of West Pokot, BtGA's engineers, Bobby Reese and Peris Kahindi, and the team finally succeeded! They discovered that the topography of the rivers and landscape was drastically changed after the unprecedented rains. Rivers that were formerly 30-meters wide have now been expanded by ten to twenty meters.
The locals were happy and encouraged to see BtGA's team come to their aid. So many people depended on the bridges that were destroyed by the powerful floods - and desperately need new ones. At one site, Peris and Bobby were told that a pregnant woman recently drowned attempting to wade through the river because she couldn't stand up to the powerful currents. Sadly, this shows that bridges save lives for so many who live in a walking world. Imagine if your loved one needed medical attention, and the only hope was to risk a perilous trip to reach the other side? These are some of the real-life stories of the Pokot people that BtGA has served for many years.

Now that we have the survey data, we can begin to design new bridges for the neediest communities identified. Building bridges in remote places is a great challenge, but the end results of seeing men, women, and children safely walk over a new bridge makes it worth the effort, no matter how challenging.

All of us with BtGA want to say THANK YOU for following and supporting our recovery efforts in this time of urgency. Be A Bridge and stayed tuned for more updates to come, and always remember: Bridges are Beautiful Things!
