I hope you look at the obituary on hamilfamilyfuneralhome.com to see the 96 years of involvement with business and community that James contributed and the awards he received including being a Fellow in the AIA.
A personal story...As an architect with Boone Pope Wheeler & Pullin Architects, Mr. Wheeler had designed a building for Southwestern Bell. This just happened to be one of the first commercial jobs for me to estimate as a competitive bid proposal. I went to his office and requested an alternative material for an item and in Mr. Wheeler fashion, he looked at me sternly and said, "young lady, you see what is written on the plans and you bid what I specify." That was the end of the discussion, and I did just that. Those of you who knew James, knew he did thorough work and took great pride in details.
Over the years, and during my time in Building Inspections, continuing with my time at AGC, we worked together with pleasure and with friendship. James Wheeler was a dedicated representative of the industry serving on many of the city boards. Those of you who knew James, know when you would finish doing business with James, he was quick to have that twinkle in his eye and tell you of a proud project with the Texas Lions Association or the Boy Scouts and about one of his family members accomplishments.
James Wheeler did much for our community and industry. He was a friend to many. He left a mark and will be missed and remembered.
