Safety Tip: Trenches, Excavations & Confined Spaces
Am I In Danger?
If trenches and excavations at your site are not inspected daily for evidence of possible cave-ins, hazardous atmospheres, failure of protective systems, or other unsafe conditions, you are in danger.
How Do I Avoid Hazards?
Inspect excavations:
  • Before construction begins.
  • Daily before each shift.
  • As needed throughout the shift.
  • Following rainstorms or other hazard-increasing events (such as a vehicle or other equipment approaching the edge of an excavation).
Inspections must be conducted by a competent person who:
  • Has training in soil analysis.
  • Has training in the use of protective systems.
  • Is knowledgeable about the OSHA requirements.
  • Has authority to immediately eliminate hazards.
To help evaluate different protection systems and identify the warning signs of excavation failure, see the Guide for Daily Inspection of Trenches and Excavations. Read More.
AGC & Autodesk needs your help to measure the scope of construction labor shortages by taking a quick survey | Open until August 12th
AGC of America is seeking to understand the current state of the construction labor market, and also gauge how supply chain problems and materials price spikes are impacting your firms and the industry. We want to understand how these and other recent economic developments are impacting your operations. Your answers will better equip us to advocate for measures to help the industry’s labor needs in both the short- and long-term.
Your responses will be kept confidential; only aggregated results will be reported. The results will help us better outline the current situation to elected and appointed officials, the media, educators and your peers within the business community.
That is why we are asking you to take a few minutes to complete the following workforce survey that we and our partners at Autodesk have prepared:
Amazon cancels, delays wave of warehouse projects as e-commerce demand cools
  • Amazon has delayed or canceled plans for at least 13 facilities in its distribution network this year, according to local news reports.
  • Shifts in plans have affected locations in Texas, Florida, Louisiana, Tennessee and California, per reports. Many of these adjustments surfaced following the company’s acknowledgement that it overbuilt its warehouse footprint in April.

Why Amazon’s warehouse pullback is good news for contractors
The e-commerce giant has slowed its building spree, freeing up hard-to-find materials and land for other projects in the booming sector. Read More
Earlier this summer, AGC of America, in collaboration with HCSS, conducted a work zone safety study. This infographic provides an at-a-glance look at some key statistics gleaned from that analysis.
Who’s on the hook for design defects in design-build projects? It may not always be who you think.

In this episode, Dirk Haire, co-chair of Fox Rothschild’s Construction Law Practice Group, and David Hecker, group general counsel overseeing all claims, litigation, and investigations for Kiewit Corporation, share their wealth of knowledge on design-build risk.

Find out when and why contractors do not always bear the risk of design errors or omissions on a design-build project. This episode explains design-builders’ liability standard and discusses certain types of overreach by owners that merit pushback from design-builders.
