August 31, 2017
Dear Pastor/Friends,

Our hearts and our prayers go out to the people of South Texas, where the recent hurricane has caused so much suffering.  I met yesterday with the Texas district superintendents and our denomination's disaster response coordinators.  They are busy assessing the damage and determining the timing and scope of our response.  Of course, the WT District Disaster response team will be participating.  Our response team coordinator, Pastor Cal Calendar is notifying our team members that we might be called into service as early as Wednesday or Thursday.  Surely, we will have a presence in this effort for a considerable period.  It is possible for individuals who have not previously participated to join our district team. You can do so by contacting Pastor Calendar directly at 432-271-8007 or by contacting our east-side disaster response coordinator, Pastor Marcia Nikl at 817-994-3566. You can also follow the WT disaster response at the West Texas District Church of the Nazarene Facebook page.

Many of you have heard about the large fire that destroyed much of the building of our Refuge Church of the Nazarene in Lubbock. I will be with them this coming Sunday.  We are so grateful that no one was injured.  You can view a news story about the fire by CLICKING HERE .  We are in much prayer for Pastors Alan Wallace and Travis Zachary as they lead their flock during this season of recovery.

We rejoice with our Grassland church regarding the calling of their new pastor, Rev. Gennell Knisley, who will arrive, along with her husband, Jim, on September 10. The Knisleys are coming to us from Huron, South Dakota. They will be following Pastor James Miller, and his wife Judith, who are retiring after serving in Grassland since 2008.  We are grateful for Jim's and Judith's faithful service, and we wish them the very best during this new season of their lives.

On August 6th, I had the wonderful privilege of installing Rev. Tyler Parson as the new pastor in Cisco. I am very confident that Tyler is going to have a wonderful ministry there. He is a recent graduate of SNU and has been serving as an associate pastor with his dad in Hamlin. Tyler is pictured here (center) with his family.  His parents, Jeff and Lindsey, will be leaving Hamlin soon, as Jeff has taken a new pastorate in Nevada, Texas, at the Lone Star Nazarene Cowboy Church.  The Parsons have done a wonderful job in Hamlin over the past five years.  Hamlin First Church has experienced a dramatic turnaround under their leadership. We wish them the very best in their new assignment!

Including the Parsons, three of our pastoral families have taken new assignments and have moved, or will be moving in the near future.  Pastors Vito and Jenni Monteblanco, our former co-directors of Cactus Nazarene Ministry Center have moved to Lovington, New Mexico, where they are involved in Lovington Food Coalition, a compassionate ministry of Lovington Church of the Nazarene. Vito and Jenni were the founding missionaries at CNMC and we will always be grateful for their service as they pioneered our compassionate ministry there.

Pastor Dana Franchetti, who has been on staff at CNMC, will also be moving soon.  She has taken an assignment at the Medford, Oregon, Church of the Nazarene, where she will be an associate pastor and will be working in their immigration center. We are so grateful for her work in Cactus, especially with the children there.  Our ministries in Cactus continue to be strong under the leadership of Dr. Shawn Fouts.  We are particularly excited about the impending opening of the new Cactus Nazarene Family Clinic, which will be led by Dr. Stephanie Diehlmann who will be arriving in Cactus with her husband, Andy, in September.

We want to express our condolences and support of retired pastor, Rodney Riggan following the recent passing of his wife, Wendy.  Wendy's memorial service will be held this coming Saturday morning in Lubbock. Please CLICK HERE  for more information.

Finally, it is not too early to begin planning to attend the Shepherds' Sabbath, our annual ministers' and spouses' weekend retreat, which will be held in Abilene next January 19--21.  I am delighted to announce that our speaker this year will be the new SNU president, Dr. Keith Newman. Dr. Newman is an outstanding and encouraging speaker!

Very Highest regards,

Pastor David Downs

Deputation: David and Erika Campos, missionaries to Haiti, are coming to West Texas! Please check the schedule carefully. If you have any problems or need to make changes, contact the missionaries directly at  [email protected] and also copy Amy Spigelmyer (incoming Deputation Coordinator) at  [email protected] .

Remember - missionaries do NOT expect, or even necessarily prefer, a service in your sanctuary. They want a chance to get to know your people, share their stories, and say "thanks" for years of support. That can happen in a home, at a restaurant, in a skating rink, at the park... get creative! And please include your children and teens.
