CONSTRUCTION UPDATE

Week of October 21, 2024

Work will generally occur Monday through Friday during daytime hours (6:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.), with intermittent nighttime work (6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.). Intermittent lane closures will take place along the project corridor, with at least one lane remaining open to traffic at all times.

At times, this work may be loud or cause minor increases in dust and vibration. Traffic delays are expected. Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead, allow extra time to reach their destinations or use alternate routes, if possible.

All construction is dynamic and the schedule is subject to change. Visit the project Google Map for the most up-to-date scheduled closures and available detour routes.

ONTARIO

Holt Boulevard Widening

CREWS COMPLETE TRAFFIC SWITCH ALONG

HOLT BOULEVARD

To facilitate roadway widening for the new center-running BRT lanes, crews have switched traffic south to create protected work zones along westbound (WB) Holt Boulevard. Drivers will notice new traffic patterns along Holt Boulevard between Central Avenue and Corona Avenue.

Work within these zones may include:

  • Removing and reconstructing driveways, curbs and sidewalks
  • Roadway excavation, paving and striping
  • Removing and constructing of water and storm drains
  • Installing street light poles and modifications to traffic signals
  • Landscaping and irrigation
  • Removal and relocation of fire hydrants

Two lanes will be maintained in each direction of Holt Boulevard during this time. Please use caution while traveling through construction zones, obey roadway and pedestrian signage, and do not bypass traffic in closed lanes.

The protected work zones along WB Holt Boulevard will be in place for approximately 9 months.

Once work is complete along WB Holt Boulevard, all lanes will shift north to the newly constructed roadway and crews will perform the same work in the opposite direction to accommodate the widening of eastbound (EB) Holt Boulevard. Please be advised, street parking along both directions of Holt Boulevard in this segment of the project has been eliminated.

MONTCLAIR AND POMONA

Side-Running Stations

Crews are performing pre-construction activities in preparation for the new side-running stations along the West Valley Connector BRT route at the locations listed below. This work requires intermittent daytime lane closures to allow crews to safely perform construction work.

Once pre-construction activities are complete, crews will begin full-time outside lane closures at the future station locations for approximately six weeks. At least one lane will be open to traffic at all times. Construction activities will include demolition of any current stations, roadway demolition, utility relocation, and construction of bus pads and new stations.

Traffic delays are expected. Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead, allow extra time to reach their destinations or use alternate routes, if possible.

Station locations under construction include:

Montclair

  • EB and WB Holt Boulevard at Central Avenue
  • EB and WB Holt Boulevard at Ramona Avenue

Pomona

  • EB and WB Holt Boulevard at Towne Avenue
  • EB Holt Boulevard at Clark Avenue

Pomona Transit Center

Crews will continue construction activities at the Pomona Transit Center in order to accommodate project improvements. Work will take place in the southern loop of the transit center and will include hard removals and utility work. Construction at this location will be ongoing for several weeks.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

The West Valley Connector (WVC) project will be a 100% zero-emission Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, the first stage of the San Bernardino County zero-emission Bus Initiative and second BRT route in San Bernardino County.

Phase I of the project is 19 miles and will upgrade a portion of existing Route 61 which runs along Holt Boulevard, adding approximately 3.5 miles as center-running, dedicated bus-only lanes. There will be 21 stations in Phase I that will provide an improved transit connection to Ontario International Airport (ONT) and help build transit connectivity by linking ONT, two Metrolink lines (San Bernardino and Riverside) and multiple major activity centers along the route including Ontario Mills and Victoria Gardens. Headways will be 10 minutes in the peak commute period and 15 minutes off-peak, providing a high level of service to the community.
