Finding Balance - Living with Deer
- D. Delany, EAC Chair
As deer hunting season approaches, it is normal to feel sad that many of these beautiful, gentle creatures will lose their lives. What is prettier than a mother deer and her fawns or the expression on a deer’s face?
The harsh reality is that deer are the most dangerous wild animal in Pennsylvania. In the past five years, they have caused 69 deaths and 6,208 injuries through car accidents. They are ruining crops, damaging future timber harvests, contributing to the dwindling numbers of pollinators and songbirds, and changing the state’s forest composition.

West Vincent Elementary School Pitstop Progress
- D. Delany, EAC Chair
At the first meeting of the West Vincent Elementary School Nature Club on Nov. 7, the students had a blast creating their own Pollinator Pitstop at the school. They learned about nature while having lots of fun! Nurse Becky Kilfoy, gave a short lesson on biodiversity and pollinators, and then the students got down to work designing their garden.
Students chose the site, marked the outline with spray paint, ripped apart cardboard boxes, and fit them together like puzzle pieces to cover the ground, which is partly an old planting bed and partly lawn.
Read further to learn about the students' experience learning about biodiversity, enjoying the outdoors, and having fun!
Visit our Environmental Advisory Council web page and our Pollinator Pitstop Program web page for latest updates, resources, and articles on stormwater management, native trees and plants, pollinator pitstop gardens, and bird walks and sightings.
