Spring is in the Air!
Snow drops and crocuses are blooming, the daffodils are beginning to bud. Snug inside we're planning for spring and summer, some of us with our vegetable seed catalogs and others with our browsers actively searching out ways to make our homes, yards, and gardens more sustainable for our families, our pets, and all of the insects and wildlife in our amazing environment.
The PA Conservation and Natural Resources, suggests one way to start improving our yard health is to use native plants in our landscaping, yards, and flower beds. Use this short list of suggestions for native, environmentally-beneficial plants.
Avoiding the use of commercial herbicides and pesticides; using non-toxic products to protect ourselves, our kids, and our pets, and to preventing harmful chemicals flowing into our ground water are additional best practices in keeping a healthy yard and surrounding landscape.
Consider joining West Vincent volunteers from the Environmental Advisory Council (EAC) in the meetings, events, and projects of their Garden and Nature clubs. The EAC meets the first Thursday of every month at 7:00. All are welcome to meet with neighbors and learn about the many projects the EAC is conducting, with topics as diverse as bird and frogs, heritage trees, butterfly habitats, household stormwater management, and more!
