Protecting and Improving our Watersheds
Kathy McDevitt, EAC and CETT member
As we welcome the warmer weather, spring showers may be over, but summer storms are not far behind.
Dependent on where you live in West Vincent (map above), rain falling on your property will either wash into French Creek or Pickering Creek, both of which empty into the Schuylkill River and Delaware Bay. When products such as fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, and other substances are introduced to our pristine streams, they become pollutants that contaminate drinking water and kill the plants and animals that live in and depend on the water.
Suggested solutions to manage flooding, retain water for dry weather, and reduce the quantity of nutrients and chemicals that are washed off their property can be found in a booklet, "A Homeowner's Guide to Stormwater Management", prepared by the Office of Watersheds, Philadelphia Water Department.
Our county and neighboring townships are also a resource and our partners in improving and protecting the health of our watersheds: Chester County, East Pikeland Township, Uwchlan Township.
Visit our Environmental Advisory Council webpage for resources, education and special projects.

Household Hazardous Waste Disposal – Drive Up and Drop Off! - John Barnett, Sustainability Committee member
Our residents and neighboring townships have it EASY when we need to discard household hazardous waste (HHW)! Several times each year, the Chester County Solid Waste Authority (CCSWA) hosts full-day drive-thru collection sites at convenient locations throughout the county.
On Saturday, April 9, the first event was held in the parking lot of Technical College High School, Pickering Campus. CCSWA personnel and employees from MXI Environmental Services were ready for county residents to drive up and dispose of their fluorescent bulbs, oil-based paint, old automobile fluids, pesticide bottles, and other types of HHW.
Workers removed the HHW from the cars and deposited in the appropriate disposal and recycling containers. No one had to get out of their cars!
The event requires pre-registration for your desired drop off time. Our Sustainability Committee chair, Kirk Reinbold registered for a morning timeslot and was, “in and out in under five minutes!”. VERY convenient!
The remaining four Household Hazardous Waste Collection events will be held at various locations across the county in 2022.
Follow these steps to participate:
Visit the Sustainability Committee webpage to keep in touch and up to date.
