Kenneth Rowe, Methodist historian, dies at 84
By Sam Hodges
Oct. 13, 2021 | UM News
The Rev. Kenneth Rowe, shown here in the United Methodist archives at Drew University in Madison, N.J., was an author, professor, librarian, archivist and bibliographer. Rowe died Oct. 8, at age 84. File photo courtesy of the United Methodist Commission on Archives and History.

Methodist history would certainly have happened without the Rev. Kenneth E. Rowe. But colleagues say he did as much as anyone to make sure the story was told well — and in full.
Rowe turned from parish ministry to scholarship early in his career and became the leading United Methodist bibliographer, as well as an essential player in the placing of the United Methodist Archives and History Center at Drew University.
He also taught church history for many years, and wrote or cowrote key books on Methodism, including “The Methodist Experience in America.”
In his various roles, Rowe worked to have an account that went beyond the actions of bishops and other top leaders.
“He completely reshaped how we understand the narrative of Methodism in America, expanding it to include indigenous persons, women and LGBTQ+ persons,” said the United Methodist Commission on Archives and History in a remembrance.
Rowe died on Oct. 8, at age 84, in New Bern, North Carolina, where he lived in retirement with his husband, James Sawyer. Read more.
Does The UMC fund...?
This content was produced by Ask The UMC, a ministry of United Methodist Communications.
One of the more frequent questions Ask The UMC receives is about whether The United Methodist Church funds particular non-United Methodist organizations. We also find some people are surprised by the United Methodist-related entities their apportionments fund partially or not at all.

General Conference approves a budget to support vital international, national, and regional missions and ministries. The general church budget is proportionally allocated (apportioned) to annual conferences, which in turn ask each local church to contribute a portion of its tithes and offerings to support these ministries. In this way, each congregation gives a fair share to support the church's work worldwide.
The Financial Commitment Booklet includes a listing and explanation of the general church budget and how it is allocated each year.

2021 Faith Sharing Event
October 23 9 AM to 12 PM
The Rev. Olu Brown, founding pastor of one of the UMC’s fastest-growing churches will keynote the Eastern PA Conference’s 2021 Faith-Sharing evangelism seminar Oct. 23, at 9 AM to 12 Noon via Zoom. This training meets the evangelism course requirement for clergy, and provides CEUs.
Brown leads Impact Church, in East Point, Ga., part of Metropolitan Atlanta. His vision and leadership has taken the multicultural church from 25 people at its birth in 2007, to more than 5,000 worshipers online now, with 62 staff and a $4 million budget.
Brown will teach about “Rethinking evangelism and connecting in innovative ways with people and communities to share the love of Christ. Learn how to rethink your evangelism model by embracing the world, using technology and pursuing the Great Commission with a grassroots approach.”
He has developed at “Impact Church DCD,” Doing Church Differently™  a model that “redefines the church experience through inclusiveness, relatable messages, energetic weekly gatherings, unique events and activities, relevant youth programs and community outreach…to offer healing, justice and compassion to the world.”
Olu Brown, an author and podcast host, announced in May that he will retire from active pastoral ministry in June 2022. He may then focus more on using his gifts as an author, coach, consultant and speaker to help “empower people and organizations to optimize every moment as they strive to Normalize Next.”

By Water & the Spirit: Theology & Practice of Baptism

  • Saturday November 13, 9:00-11:30 AM
  • Saturday November 20, 9:00-11:30 AM

Baptism is at the core of who we are as Christians -- but how well do we truly understand this sacrament? Those of us who serve in church leadership often face practical questions with deep theological roots. Why do we baptize? What happens in baptism? Why do we baptize infants? What do we mean when we say "remember your baptism" -- especially if baptized as an infant?... Learn More

Engaging the Community for Social Transformation
Local churches, non-profits, and community organizations can be excellent resources for finding best practices, discerning action steps, and offering wisdom in overcoming obstacles as we seek to partner with God and engage the community.
Our first webinar session features Dan Billingsley, Chief Strategy Officer at Community Service Council in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Dan has twenty-two years of experience in the non-profit world with the focus areas of institutional advancement, leadership positioning, and public policy change in community services, education, and the arts as well as in diversity, equity and inclusion, mental health, and civic engagement. With a strong faith background, Dan offers insight from a non-profit lens on how the local church can engage the community and build relationships in ways that bring about tangible change.
The webinar series is offered monthly through the end of the year at 11 a.m. Central Time.
Dates are Sept. 23, Oct. 28, Nov. 18, and Dec. 16.
