Developers Hoping to Begin Construction this Fall on
North 80, Westchester's Long-Awaited Biotech Hub
After a decade of planning, developers are hoping to begin construction this fall on North 80, a $1.2 million biotech hub.
The massive development would be the largest biotech campus in the county, including 2.2 million square feet in medical office and research space, a 120-room hotel and 98 residential units, in addition to retail, walking and biking trails and a children’s science education center. The mix-use development, proposed for 80 undeveloped acres north of Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, is expected to create 8,000 permanent jobs and 2,500 construction jobs.
The project is being built on land leased from Westchester County. It could generate $9 million annually in taxes for local government and schools and $7 million in rent paid to the county.

17-Year Old Who Beat Sickle Cell Disease Thanks to Leading Westchester Scientist & Doctor Now Hopes to Become Doctor, is Headed to Harvard
When he was eight years old, Hanif Mouehla found himself fighting for his life at Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital after being diagnosed with sickle cell disease. Inspired by the care he received, the 17-year-old, who is now considered cured of the disease thanks to the treatment he received, is now eyeing the pre-med track at Harvard University so that he can pay it forward one day.
Dr. Mitchell Cairo, Medical and Scientific Director of the Cellular and Tissue Engineering Laboratory at Westchester Medical Center and a pediatric hematology-oncology specialist, treated Hanif nearly a decade ago and now has another connection to him: he's his boss.
Last summer, Hanif worked in the doctor’s research lab, aligned in the mutual goal to find a cure for the debilitating disease, which is an inherited blood disorder that affects an estimated 70,000-100,000 Americans. Cairo’s sickle cell disease therapy is currently in the second phase of a clinical trial, with a handful of centers participating in it.
Years ago, Dr. Cairo’s research paved the way for Hanif to receive a familial haploidentical stem cell transplant from his mother, Khuraira Musa, since none of his siblings were a match. Khuraira’s cells were first “supercharged” in Dr. Cairo’s lab to ensure that they could destroy the sickle cells in Hanif’s bloodstream.
