Celebrating 100 Years of Westchester: 1925-2025

Happy New Year! This year is particularly exciting for the Village of Westchester as we celebrate our 100th Anniversary! To honor this incredible milestone, the Village formed a 100th Anniversary (Centennial) Committee with residents Bethanny Alexander, Bill Ernst, Jeannie Helgesen, Julie Jordan, Magdalene Ladas, Rosann Nicholson, and Andrew Roback. They’ve been hard at work brainstorming creative and exciting ways to celebrate this historic year.

Stay in the loop by visiting our Centennial Webpage for updates, events, and sponsorship opportunities. Let’s make this year one for the history books! 🎊

Introducing Our Centennial Logo

As part of our year-long celebration of Westchester’s 100th anniversary, we are thrilled to introduce our official centennial logo, which can be found at the top of this newsletter. This emblem was envisioned by our Centennial Committee and brought to life by Westchester business owner Kapreshia Linzy of Perfect Image Transfers.

The logo pays homage to Westchester’s rich history and unique character. At its heart is a knight, giving a nod to our original logo and symbolizing the Village founders’ vision of a model English-style town. Surrounding the knight, you’ll find the vibrant cone flowers of the Wolf Road Prairie, a cherished natural landmark and a beautiful reminder of our roots.

We hope this logo inspires pride in our past, appreciation for the present, and excitement for Westchester’s bright future as we celebrate this milestone year together.

Update: Thank you for the overwhelmingly positive feedback about our centennial logo! Many of you have asked if this design will be featured on the upcoming village vehicle sticker, and we’re happy to confirm that it will! We appreciate your enthusiasm as we continue to celebrate this milestone year together.

WINTER PARKING RESTRICTIONS ARE IN EFFECT

During the winter months, Public Works crews work hard to keep our streets free of snow and ice. Your cooperation is essential to ensure smooth snow removal operations. Please follow these guidelines:

  • Place garbage cans at least 3 feet behind the curb—never in the street.
  • Do not shovel or blow snow back into the cleared streets.
  • Observe "No Parking Snow Route" signs. Snow parking restrictions are enforced after 2 inches of snowfall from December 1 through March 31.

Primary Snow Routes

  • After 2 inches of snowfall, all vehicles must be removed from Primary Emergency Snow Routes
  • Vehicles must remain off the street until Public Works has thoroughly cleared the streets.
  • If snowfall is ongoing, restrictions remain in place until plowing is completed for the day.
  • Check the signs at the corners of your block to confirm if your street is a Primary Snow Route.

Secondary Snow Routes

  • After 2 inches of snowfall, parking is restricted as follows (Parking Ordinance 11.32.160):
  • Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, and Friday: No parking on the even-numbered side of the street.
  • Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday: No parking on the odd-numbered side of the street.
  • These restrictions apply to all side streets not designated as Primary Snow Routes.
  • Check the signs at the corners and center of your block for guidance.

Fire Hydrants

If you have a fire hydrant on your parkway, please keep it clear of snow. This ensures quick access for the Fire Department during emergencies and helps snow plows identify hydrants more easily.

Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our streets safe and accessible during winter weather! Please follow the posted signs that are on all Village streets to avoid being ticketed or having your vehicle towed. Check the Village website or call the Police Department at 708-345-0060, extension 2, during business hours if you have questions.

PUBLIC NOTICE

The properties in the Village of Westchester commonly known as 10001 Roosevelt Road, 9999 Roosevelt Road, 9999 Derby Lane, 9930 (a/k/a 9914) Derby Lane, and 9909-9919 Roosevelt Road have been noncompliant with the Westchester Municipal Code for some time. The Village has attempted to collaborate with the property owner and its agents to assist with bringing the properties into compliance with the Westchester Municipal Code. Despite these Village efforts, the property owner and its agents have been unable or unwilling to provide the necessary repairs and maintenance to remediate the numerous code violations and other issues.

As such, and in order to protect the health, safety and welfare of its residents, the Village filed a circuit court action to compel the property owner to remediate the code violations and seek the required inspections and approvals from the Village.  As of January 2, 2025, the Court has granted temporary restraining orders prohibiting the use and occupancy of the properties located at 9999 Roosevelt Road, 9999 Derby Lane and 9930 (a/k/a 9914) Derby Lane. Additionally, the Court has authorized the Village to secure the property located at 9930 (a/k/a 9914) Derby Lane. The circuit court matter is ongoing, and the Village will continue to pursue the matter until the properties are fully compliant with the Westchester Municipal Code.
