A Story of a Good Deed

GOT A NEIGHBOR YOU WANT TO RECOGNIZE?

Remember that neighbors don’t have to live next door, just someone who lives in Westcreek. It could be as simple as a mom who helps out by picking up a child from school, a neighbor who cuts your yard for you just because, or brings in your trash cans. It does not have to be a grand gesture, just something that made your life easier, made you happy, or was just thoughtful.

If you would like to recognize their good deeds and show your appreciation, please submit your recommendation by a deadline of the 20th day of the month prior to publication to: frontoffice@villagesofwestcreek.com.

Memorial Day is a national holiday in the United States observed every year on the last Monday of May. It honors and remembers the brave men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Memorial Day's history dates back to the aftermath of the Civil War when people began holding tributes to fallen soldiers.

The first official observance of Memorial Day was on May 30, 1868, when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. Over time, the holiday became known as Memorial Day, and it was expanded to honor all American soldiers who died in any war.

One way to observe Memorial Day is to visit Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery. This peaceful and solemn place is where we can pay our respects to the men and women who gave their lives for our country. We can place flowers or flags on their graves to show our gratitude.

Finally, we can observe Memorial Day by participating in the National Moment of Remembrance. This moment of silence takes place at 3:00 PM on Memorial Day, and it is a way to honor the memory of our fallen soldiers no matter where we are.

In conclusion, Memorial Day is an important holiday that reminds us to honor and remember the brave men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Let us never forget the sacrifice that these soldiers made for our country.

Community Gathers to Honor Heather Mallia at Sports Park Dedication

Residents came together at the Villages of Westcreek Sports Park on Saturday, April 12, 2025, to rename the park to the "Heather Mallia Sports Park." This heartfelt ceremony honored Heather, a dedicated community volunteer and leader who passed away in April 2024 after a long illness.

Family, friends, and community members joined the Board and Staff members to celebrate Heather's contributions to the community. She served on many committees and the Board of Directors, focusing on improving the Sports Park and increasing its amenities.

Those attending remembered her contributions and the joy she brought to their lives. Her commitment to this park and our community was inspiring.

During the ceremony, attendees shared touching stories about Heather's life. Many recalled the shared laughter, teamwork, and efforts to enhance our community, highlighting her lasting impact.

A new monument was placed at the entrance of the walking trail. It displays Heather's name and pays tribute to her spirit. A bouquet of flowers was placed at the monument's base, creating a beautiful homage to her memory. The park's renaming reflects Heather's passion for community and dedication to bringing people together.

"It's only right that we name this park after someone who worked so hard to make it better for everyone," said Elaine Mauer, VWOA Board President. "Heather's commitment inspires us to get involved in our community and support each other."

The Heather Mallia Sports Park will honor her legacy. It will remain a place for sports, recreation, and community and family gatherings—a lasting reminder of Heather's love and dedication.

ARCHITECTURAL REVIEW COMMITTEE
KNOW THE CODE. COMMUNITY STANDARDS!

Garage Modifications and Maintenance

As part of our commitment to maintaining the aesthetic and structural integrity of our community, we would like to remind residents of key standards regarding garage modifications and maintenance. Please take note of the following important points:

  1. ARC Approval Required: Any changes to your garage that may be visible from the outside require approval from the Architectural Review Committee (ARC). Specifically, garages cannot be converted into living spaces if the exterior appearance indicates such a change.
  2. Side Entry Doors: Homeowners may install side entry doors on their garages, provided that these doors are located behind the property fence. This allows for functional access while maintaining the visual harmony of our community.
  3. Garage Door Screens: If you choose to install garage door screens, remember that all hardware, brackets, and hooks must be positioned behind the garage door(s). When not in use, these screens should remain invisible from the outside, and it is essential to keep them in excellent condition.
  4. Maintenance of Garage Doors: All garage doors must be well-maintained, which includes regular painting and repairs to any damage. Keeping garage doors in excellent condition is crucial for the overall appearance of our neighborhood.
  5. Decorative Features: Residents can enhance their garage doors with decorative magnetic hinges and handle sets without needing ARC approval. This allows for personal expression while adhering to community standards.
  6. Carports and Additional Garages: Please be advised that the construction of carports or additional garages is not permitted within our community. This standard helps to maintain uniformity and maximize available space.

We appreciate your cooperation in following these guidelines to ensure our community remains a beautiful and welcoming place for all residents.

Standards Reference: Article 6.8.7

If you have any questions regarding the Standards, please email the Front Office at FrontOffice@villagesofwestcreek.com or call the VWOA Office at 210-679-8761.

A row of colorful houses on a tree line street with picket fences. Community Safety and Crime Prevention!

ARE YOU PREPARED FOR AN EMERGENCY?

Emergencies can happen at any time, whether it be a natural disaster, power outage, or a medical emergency. It’s important to be prepared for any situation, especially when it comes to your home. Here are some tips for emergency preparedness for your home.

1. Create an Emergency Kit: The first step to emergency preparedness is to create an emergency kit. This should include items such as non-perishable food, water, a first aid kit, flashlights, batteries, and any necessary medication. Keep your emergency kit in a designated spot that is easily accessible.

2. Have a Plan: It’s important to have a plan in case of an emergency. This should include knowing how to evacuate your home if necessary and where to meet family members. Make sure to practice this plan with your family so everyone knows what to do in case of an emergency.

3. Stay Informed: Keep yourself informed about any potential emergencies in your area. This can include signing up for local emergency alerts or simply keeping an eye on the news. Being aware of potential emergencies can help you better prepare for them.

4. Secure Your Home: Make sure your home is secure in case of an emergency. This can include having smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors, as well as securing any loose items in your home that could become a hazard during an emergency.

5. Have a Backup Power Source: It’s important to have a backup power source in case of a power outage. This can include a generator or even portable chargers for your phone or other electronic devices.

By following these tips, you can better prepare yourself and your home for any potential emergencies. Remember, it’s always better to be prepared than caught off guard.

The Villages of Westcreek is a beautiful community that boasts of its abundance of oak trees. These trees are not only aesthetically pleasing but also provide numerous benefits to the environment and the community itself. However, there is a threat that could potentially wipe out these trees, and that is oak wilt.

Oak wilt is a fungal disease that affects oak trees, and it can spread quickly through root grafts or by sap-feeding beetles. Once infected, the tree's water-conducting system is disrupted, and it eventually dies. The disease has been found in the Villages of Westcreek, and it is essential to take preventative measures to protect these trees.

One of the best ways to protect your trees is to avoid pruning them during the spring months, which includes the beginning of February through the end of June. Oak wilt is most likely to spread during this time, so it is best to prune during the fall and winter when the beetles are less active and when the fungal mats where the beetles pick up the oak wilt fungal spores are not fresh. When pruning oaks, even in fall and winter, always paint open cuts on the tree immediately after each cut. This includes any damage or wounds to any part of the tree (branches, trunk, or roots) that exposes live wood, similar to pruning, as any fresh wound can attract the beetles carrying oak wilt spores. Regular paint or spray paint from the hardware store is adequate. Tree wound products are fine as well, but not necessary. Note: if you are pruning non-oak species, like elms, ashes, crape myrtles, etc., it is not necessary to paint cuts made on these trees and is actually not advised.

If you suspect that your tree is infected with oak wilt, it is essential to contact a certified arborist immediately. They can diagnose the tree and recommend the best course of action to prevent the spread of the disease. Keep in mind that the continual two-year drought has had a negative impact on our trees, so make sure you get a confirmation of oak wilt from a qualified and certified arborist before moving forward with oak wilt treatments because drought stress symptoms can be easily confused with oak wilt symptoms.

In conclusion, the oak trees in the Villages of Westcreek are an essential part of the community, and it is crucial to take preventative measures to protect them from oak wilt. By avoiding pruning during the spring and early summer, painting all open wounds and cuts on oaks immediately, and contacting a certified arborist if you suspect an infection, we can preserve these beautiful trees for future generations to enjoy. For more information on oak wilt, visit https://texasoakwilt.org/
