In our little corner of the world, aka Westcreek Gardens, there are several of us who reach out to each other for just about anything. We may share chocolate chip cookies, flour or eggs to make them or something else. We respond to each other if sickness occurs, at least for comfort. If someone needs transportation, or to transport something, someone or a truck is available, a helping hand for a difficult project, or to ensure the safety of each other's children or pets. We always welcome with open arms others in our neighborhood, willing to share or just be kind.
So thank you Olga, Art, Brady, Loren, Joyce, Bridgette, Daisy, and so many others in our Westcreek Gardens for all you do.

GOT A NEIGHBOR YOU WANT TO RECOGNIZE?
Remember that neighbors don’t have to live next door, just someone who lives in Westcreek. It could be as simple as a mom who helps out by picking up a child from school, a neighbor who cuts your yard for you just because, or brings in your trash cans. It does not have to be a grand gesture, just something that made your life easier, made you happy, or was just thoughtful.
If you would like to recognize their good deeds and show your appreciation, please submit your recommendation by a deadline of the 20th day of the month prior to publication to: frontoffice@villagesofwestcreek.com.

The proposed budget was unanimously approved during the VWOA Board of Directors meeting held on September 21st. Additionally, a rate increase of 10% for Fiscal Year 2024, effective January 1st, was approved with three votes in favor and one opposed. The FY 2024 annual assessment will be $475.20. This increase is necessary to support the Board's commitment to financial sustainability and ensure that the VWOA can continue to provide high-quality services to the community.
The Board's dedication to transparency and financial responsibility is reassuring to the community. Their decision-making process reflects their commitment to meeting the needs of all residents while balancing the community's needs and keeping assessments reasonable. The Board's decision aligned with their commitment to financial sustainability and will help ensure that the VWOA can continue to provide high-quality services to its residents.
It is important to note that the VWOA has several major projects and repairs planned for the upcoming year, including replacing the irrigation and landscaping at village monuments, installing new monuments with lighting, repairing and upgrading the pool bathhouse, upgrading the kiddie pool, redoing the pool decking, and replacing the community center flooring. Additionally, plans are to build a more secure workshop storage and perform tree trimming in the park. All these projects and repairs are crucial to maintaining and improving the quality of life for the residents. Fully funding our capital improvement and repair and replacement funds as recommended by the reserve study is essential to ensure that these projects and repairs can be completed without compromising the community's financial stability.
It is also crucial to continue funding events for the families of Westcreek, such as the Easter Egg Hunt, adding Bingo Nights to our already successful Bingo Day activities, Casino Nights, Family Fall Festival, and Santa Event. These events bring the community together and improve the quality of life for all residents.
We appreciate your understanding and support as we work to maintain the high-quality services that the VWOA provides. Thank you for your continued support and participation in the community.

STRATEGIC PLANNING COMMITTEE
Do you want to play a role in shaping the future of your community's common areas and amenities? The VWOA Strategic Planning Committee is looking for volunteers to help with long-term planning for the Association's reserve funds.
The Association has two reserve accounts: the Repair and Replacement Fund and the Capital Improvement Fund. It is critical that we have a solid plan in place for maintaining existing items and adding new ones. Every few years, the Association contracts with a firm to conduct a Reserve Study, which itemizes the useful life of our community items, identifies necessary repairs or replacements, and provides a funding plan to ensure we have enough money saved to meet our obligations.
As a member of the Strategic Planning Committee, you'll have the opportunity to use the Reserve Study to list short-term and long-term projects, create a 5-year plan for reserve projects, and take suggestions from the community and committees on requested amenity additions and improvements. Based on the committee's projections, your recommendations will be presented to the Board.
This is a critical opportunity to have a voice in planning the future of your community's common areas and amenities. If you're interested in serving on this committee, please email our community manager at CM@VillagesofWestcreek.com. The committee will meet via Zoom so you can participate from the safety and comfort of your home.
Join us and help shape the future of your community!

Last month, Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar hosted a Fentanyl Awareness Town Hall Meeting addressing this drug's dangers at the VWOA Community Center. Two mothers (Veronica Kaprosy and Christina Villagrana) who lost children due to Fentanyl poisoning were also in attendance to share their stories. The presentation and discussion highlighted the need for increased education and awareness about the risks of this lethal drug.
Sheriff Salazar stressed the importance of discussing the dangers of Fentanyl with family members, especially children. He emphasized that starting the conversation early with age-appropriate language can help prevent tragedies. Porch pirate season is underway, and it's important to take steps to protect your packages from theft. There are several ways to avoid porch pirates, including having your package rerouted to only be delivered when you're there, sending it to a neighbor who is home, changing your delivery for signatures only, or sending it to your workplace.
One effective method is to get permission to ship all your packages to your work address. This way, they won't be left unguarded at your doorstep for hours, and anyone walking by could snatch them. If this option works for you, encourage friends and family members to ship packages to your work address as well.
Another option is to ask a trusted friend or neighbor to receive your packages for you. If they are retired or work from home, they may be happy to let you have packages delivered to them for safekeeping.
If neither of those options works, consider using a service that lets you arrange for a package to be held at a warehouse until you arrive home. You can then arrange delivery during evening hours that suits your schedule better.
Finally, setting up a live recording video camera aimed at your porch can help you spot a theft as it happens and alert law enforcement officials. It may also provide a video to help identify the thieves.
Remember, taking steps to protect your packages from porch pirates is important. Don't let your packages fall into the wrong hands – take action today to keep them safe and secure.

Texans are preparing to observe Go Purple Day on Thursday, October 19th. This day serves as an opportunity to raise awareness about domestic violence by wearing purple. October is also Domestic Violence Awareness Month, which offers a crucial time to educate and inform the public about the devastating effects of domestic violence.
The San Antonio Police Department reports receiving more than 40,000 family violence-related calls each year on average. This statistic highlights the urgent need for enhanced awareness, education, and prevention efforts to combat this pervasive issue.
Adding to this concern, the Bexar County Sheriff's Office has observed a significant increase in aggravated family violence arrests over the past two years. This alarming trend emphasizes the importance of taking action and raising awareness about domestic abuse.
If you or someone you know is a victim of domestic violence, it is crucial to seek help and support. The National Domestic Violence Hotline provides confidential assistance 24/7/365. You can call 1-800-799-SAFE (7233) or 911 for immediate help.
Domestic Violence Awareness Month allows us to unite as a community to support victims, raise awareness, and advocate for change. If you want to learn more about what Bexar County is doing to combat domestic violence and access additional resources, visit the Collaborative Commission on Domestic Violence website at ccdv.org.
Remember, we all have a role to play in ending domestic violence, and by working together, we can make a positive difference in the lives of those impacted by this issue.
Don't forget to wear purple on Go Purple Day to support this critical cause.

We are excited to announce that we've recently updated our website's "Lost and Found" page. Our goal is to provide a helpful and informative resource for our community, and we believe this update will be a valuable addition to your toolkit.
One major improvement to the "Lost and Found" page is that we've now included resources for those who have lost or found a missing pet. We understand that pets are important members of many families, and we want to help reunite them with their loved ones as quickly as possible. We've compiled a list of local animal shelters, rescue organizations, and online resources that can assist you in your efforts to find your furry friend.
We believe that these changes to our "Lost and Found" page will make it an even more useful tool for our community. We hope that you take advantage of these resources and that they will help you if you lose or find a pet.

GAZEBOS
As Homeowners become more interested in outdoor living spaces, gazebos have become a popular addition to many properties. However, following the new standards the Architectural Review Committee set forth is important.
According to the standards, gazebos must be freestanding and cannot be attached to houses or other approved structures. The size is limited to a maximum of 144 square feet and a height of 10 feet. When it comes to materials and color, wood, wood composite, powder-coated metal, or resin materials with the appearance of wood are acceptable. Untreated wood must be stained or painted. The roof must be solid and complement the dwelling.
Additionally, homeowners must obtain approval from the ARC (Architectural Review Committee) before constructing a gazebo. This ensures that the design and materials are in compliance with the new standards.
Multiple options are available regarding the foundation, including concrete, pavers, bricks, decking, or skids. Choosing a foundation suitable for your gazebo's size and weight is important.
By following these new standards and obtaining the necessary approvals, homeowners can add a beautiful and functional gazebo to their properties while ensuring that it is safe and visually appealing. So, if you're considering adding a gazebo to your property, do your research and consult a professional to ensure that your project meets the requirements.

As Villages of Westcreek community members, we have all seen social media posts claiming that our community's appearance has decreased over the years. While it's true that our community has been around for over 36 years, it doesn't have to show its age. We can all do several things to keep our properties looking good and ageless.
-
We should all consciously try to maintain our front lawns and gardens. Regularly mowing the lawn, trimming bushes, and adding some colorful flowers can go a long way in making our homes look well-kept and inviting. We can also consider investing in outdoor lighting to enhance the appearance of our homes at night.
-
We should all take pride in our homes and maintain them regularly. This includes keeping the exterior of our homes clean and free of debris. Regularly painting the exterior of our homes, replacing missing roof shingles, and repairing any cracks in the foundation can all help maintain the overall appearance of our community.
-
We should all work together as a community to keep our public areas clean and well-maintained. This includes picking up litter, reporting any broken streetlights or signs to the appropriate authorities, and volunteering for community clean-up events.
By following these simple tips, we can all do our part in keeping our community looking beautiful and ageless. Let's all take pride in our homes and work together to make the Villages of Westcreek a place we can all be proud to call home.

Energy-efficient windows are a great investment for any homeowner looking to save money and increase the comfort of their home. By reducing the amount of energy lost through windows, energy-efficient windows can provide a number of benefits that make them worth considering.
-
Lower Energy Bills - One of the most obvious benefits of energy-efficient windows is that they can help reduce your energy bills. By reducing the amount of heat that escapes from your home during the winter and the amount of cool air that escapes during the summer, energy-efficient windows can help keep your home at a comfortable temperature without relying as much on your HVAC system. This can lead to significant savings on your monthly energy bills, which can add up to hundreds or thousands of dollars over the course of the year.
-
Increased Comfort - Energy-efficient windows can also help increase the comfort of your home by reducing drafts and keeping temperatures more consistent throughout the day. This can help eliminate hot and cold spots in your home, making it more comfortable for you and your family. Additionally, energy-efficient windows can help reduce noise pollution from outside, which can be especially beneficial if you live in a busy or noisy area.
-
Increased Home Value - Finally, energy-efficient windows can also help increase the value of your home. Many homebuyers are now looking for energy-efficient features when shopping for a home, and energy-efficient windows can be a major selling point. By installing energy-efficient windows, you can make your home more attractive to potential buyers and increase its overall value.
Overall, there are many benefits to installing energy-efficient windows in your home. From lower energy bills to increased comfort and home value, energy-efficient windows can provide a number of advantages that make them a smart investment for any homeowner.

This month, we'll discuss the effects of hoarding on individuals, pets, and the community.
-
Hoarding can be particularly harmful to vulnerable people, like the elderly or those with disabilities. When hoarders' living conditions become unsafe, their health and well-being can be at risk. Hoarders often live in unsanitary conditions, which can lead to the spread of disease and other health hazards. Hoarding can also cause social isolation, which can worsen the impact on vulnerable individuals.
-
Hoarders may have difficulty taking care of their pets, which can result in neglect and even death. In some cases, hoarders may have too many pets to care for, leading to overcrowding and unclean conditions.
-
The community can also be affected by hoarding. Hoarders may accumulate so much clutter that it spills into public spaces, creating an eyesore and a potential safety hazard. In extreme cases, hoarding can cause property damage, such as interfering with electrical systems or causing structural damage to buildings.
In conclusion, hoarding can harm not just the hoarder but also vulnerable individuals, pets, and the community. It's crucial for hoarders to seek help and support to address their behavior and prevent further harm.
Next month we will look at what resources are available for those struggling with Hoarding Disorders.

As we transition into the fall season, it's important to consider ways to discourage rodents and squirrels from entering your home. These pests can cause damage to your property and pose a health risk to you and your family. Here are a few tips to keep them at bay.
First, seal any cracks or openings in your home's exterior. Rodents can squeeze through surprisingly small gaps, so it's important to be thorough. Use caulk or steel wool to seal any openings around windows, doors, and pipes.
Next, keep your yard tidy. Rodents and squirrels are attracted to cluttered spaces where they can hide and find food. Keep your lawn mowed, trim overgrown bushes, and remove any debris or trash.
It's also important to store food properly. Keep all food, including pet food, in sealed containers. Avoid leaving food out overnight; always clean up spills and crumbs promptly.
Finally, consider using traps or deterrents. Many safe and humane options, such as ultrasonic repellents or live traps, are available. Be sure to research the best option for your specific situation.
Following these tips can discourage rodents and squirrels from entering your home and keep your property and family safe and healthy.

RECYCLING BY NUMBER
Have you ever noticed the small numbers in triangles on the bottom of plastic containers? They were not initially meant to indicate recycled material, but to identify the plastic resin content, created by the Society of the Plastics Industry, aka the Plastics Industry Association.
Local recycling facilities collect different types of plastics, of which there are seven identified, but not all facilities are the same when it comes to recycling plastics. To know more about each state’s recycling information, visit EARTH911.COM.
The big question is which ones are safe, safer, or not at all safe. The following is a breakdown of all seven types of plastic.
-
PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate) – water bottles and soda bottles are the most common containers using PET and can be easily recycled, however, avoid reusing them as the leaching of carcinogens and bacterial growth have been shown to be very present and difficult to clean.
-
HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene) – this is the safest, commonly used plastic for milk jugs, detergent containers and oil bottles and fully recyclable.
-
PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) – soft and flexible, PVC is used for food wrapping, but not commonly recycled. PVC contains toxins which leach throughout its life cycle.
-
LDPE (Low-Density Polyethylene) – used for making plastic bags, such as grocery bags, shrink wraps, dry cleaner garment bags, and more, LDPE is safe and reusable. The downside is the harm to the environment.
-
PP (Polypropylene) – safe for reuse, recyclers don’t accept it, but its common use is margarine, butter, yogurt containers, chip bags, cereal bags, and more.
-
PS (Polystyrene) – also known as styrofoam, avoidance is recommended as it leaches styrene, a carcinogen that may affect health and reproduction. PS accounts for about 35% of landfill material, not recyclable, litters the environment and is commonly found in marine animals’ stomachs.
-
(BPA, Polycarbonate, and other Plastics) – nothing is recycled or reused as it can leak chemicals and is known as an endocrine disruptor.
Plastics that are tossed in the garbage and buried in a landfill may take from 100 to 500 years to decompose. Please consider the possibilities of recycling to reuse and repurpose, to protect natural resources and our environment.

Time to Plant Wildflowers
It's about time to plant bluebonnet and other wildflower seeds if you want beautiful flowers in spring. Plant the seeds in October and November (early October is best). Choose wildflowers that are native to the region. Choose an area that gets a minimum of 8 hours of sunlight and that drains well where the soil is not compacted. Wildflowers do not like standing water around their roots. Texas bluebonnets germinate in the fall and grow throughout the winter, and usually bloom around the end of March to mid-May. There are many other wildflowers to choose from or even seed packets with a variety mix of native flower seeds.
Time to Plant Trees
In San Antonio, the best time to plant trees is in fall. This allows your trees to establish roots all through winter. Our trees, shrubs, and woody perennials need the 6 months of winter to get their roots established so that they can take on the brutal heat of our summers. In summer, moisture from the soil is directed to the plant parts above ground. So it's not so much the cold we worry about when planting trees here in San Antonio. It's the summer heat. (If planting tropical fruit trees or citrus, you will need to protect them in the event of a freeze.) It's also the best time for planting shrubs and woody perennials.
Best Time for Dividing and Transplanting
Since plants will experience less heat stress, fall is the perfect time to dig and divide plants that have become crowded. Some perennials that can be dug up and divided now are: iris, canna, phlox, coneflowers, hardy amaryllis, Shasta daisy, liriope, daylilies, and hosta. It's also the perfect time to transplant a tree, shrub or perennial that you realize might be better off in another area of your landscape.
8th Annual San Antonio Monarch and Pollinator Festival
The festival is 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. on Oct. 7 at Brackenridge Park near the zoo. Admission is free.
There will be hands-on, nature-based activities with more than 30 educational partners designed for kids and adults. There also will be monarch butterfly tagging, a pollinator procession, Dia de la Muertos altar, monarch migration obstacle course, and more. For additional details, visit www.bloomingwithbirdie.com/monarchfest.

As the spooky season approaches, it's important to remember to celebrate safely.
The recommended trick-or-treating hours in our community are from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. This allows for a fun and enjoyable experience for everyone involved.
In addition, let's remember to be mindful of those who have food allergies. The Teal Pumpkin Project is a great initiative encouraging households to provide non-food items for those who cannot consume candy or other treats. Let's ensure that all our community's kids can participate in the fun.
As we venture into the neighborhood, let's consider some safety tips. Always travel in groups, stay on well-lit paths, and be aware of your surroundings. It's easy to get caught up in the excitement of the holiday, but let's ensure we take the necessary precautions to keep ourselves and our children safe. It's also important to make sure your costume is safe. Avoid costumes that are too long or have loose fabric that can trip you up, and make sure any props you're carrying won't cause harm to yourself or others.
So, let's have a happy and safe Halloween, Villages of Westcreek! Enjoy the festivities and make some spooky memories with your loved ones.
