Sector Engagement - Law Enforcement
Lieutenant Vincent Daniello of the Danbury Police Department describes the importance of his involvement with both the Stand Together Make a Difference (STMAD) local prevention council and Western CT Coalition's (WCTC) Opioid Workgroup:

Having Law Enforcement represented provides an opportunity for important community interaction and dialogue that doesn't normally exist during the traditional "work day" or shift for a police officer. The exchange of ideas, education and training between law enforcement and other sectors of the community is vital in dealing with and providing possible solutions within substance abuse issues. It has helped the police department be involved more in the prevention aspect rather than just the "enforcement" area of substance abuse.

Vinnie highlights some of the good work that has been done in Danbury and the region as a result of the collaborative efforts between Danbury PD, WCTC, and STMAD:
  • Permanent Drop Box installation in the Danbury Police Department lobby
  • Community forums held at police Headquarters including emerging drug trend presentations and student survey data rollout to the public. Promotion of these events through the PD increased interest and attendance
  • A collaborative effort between STMAD, WCTC, the City of Danbury, Danbury Hospital, and Danbury Schools resulted in the creation of a video as part of the Change the Script statewide campaign to address the opioid crisis
  • A prevention/education component offered during Freshman Forum at Danbury High School
  • Weekly Community Care Team participation
  • An upcoming Narcan training course for officers to be taught in-house

Overall, Vinnie feels his involvement with the local prevention council and WCTC has improved the approach of law enforcement in dealing with substance abuse to treat it more as a disease than an act of crime. While continuing to address illegal substances being sold on the streets and the negative impact it can have on the community, he recognizes that those individuals struggling with substance use disorder need help. Law Enforcement and community coalitions are working together to break down barriers and make important connections.
