Since August 2019, Dr. John, “JT” Tassinari, OD FAAO and Dr. Angela Hegamin, PhD have been working together, alongside Dr. Loretta Ng, OD, FAAO and faculty members from the Colleges of Graduate Nursing, Health Sciences, Pharmacy, Podiatric Medicine, Veterinarian Medicine, and the office of Learning Enhancement and Academic Development, as members of the Grit & the Growth Mindset (GGM) Faculty Learning Community (FLC).
The mission of the FLC is to develop the effective use of GGM strategies within the WesternU community of learners. The FLC is undertaking its first research project, which has entailed surveying WesternU first-year students and teaching faculty to establish baseline profiles of these groups relative to grit and learning mindset and to determine how these factors correlate with first semester GPA.
This information will guide future data collection and ultimately inform interventions that colleges can adopt to foster both grit and growth mindedness in their first-year cohorts.
