Back to School Backpack Tips to Prevent Injury
from Kessler Rehabilitation Center
Backpacks: - Loaded backpack should be no more than 10% of body weight
- Backpack Size: should go from 2" below shoulder blades to slightly above the waist - It is always best to carry weight as close to body as possible
- Always wear backpack on both shoulders
WARNING! Your backpack may be too heavy if you have pain, numbness or tingling when wearing backpack, difficulty taking off or putting on, red marks. Lifting technique: use legs to lift backpack and place one shoulder strap on at a time. When buying a backpack, look for: - Padded back (to reduce pressure on back, shoulders, etc.)
- Hip and chest belts to transfer weight
- Compression straps on side of backpack (to stabilize and compress contents close to back)
- Reflective material to stay visible in early morning or evening
