From Our Principal
Good morning WHS families,
This week we wrap up the first semester with exam week at Westlake High School. Please click here to view the schedule. As we start semester two next Monday, we will have a homeroom to provide all students with an updated copy of their schedule. If you have any questions, I encourage you to reach out to your school counselor this week.
Last Wednesday all families received an email related to the Westlake High School Parent Forum to be held on January 17 from 6-8 pm. We will have three speakers covering a variety of relevant topics. The sessions will be held in one hour increments. Parents will have the ability to attend 2-one hour sessions. Topics include, teenage anxiety, being a mindful parent, and internet safety. We hope that you have the opportunity to participate in this event.
Following the Parent Forum, we will host an open discussion in the Performing Arts Center regarding a proposed drug testing policy that may be implemented in the fall of 2018. We are looking for feedback from the community and want to answer any questions that Westlake families may have. We will have representatives from schools that currently utilize a drug testing program, a representative from the testing company, Westlake Law enforcement and Westlake school administrators. Our student health and wellness is always our focus. We think it is time that we explore the topic of drug testing at Westlake High School. I have provided a few examples of policies from our fellow conference schools. They can be found here and here. I encourage you to look at their policies to get a view of what is going on in our neighboring districts.
Our school counseling staff will host IB/CCP/AP Night on Thursday, January 25 at 7 pm in the Performing Arts Center. This is an opportunity to learn about these different options at Westlake High School and ask questions. We hope that you can attend.
As always, I encourage you to review the WHS announcements. They are a great source of information that are updated daily. Finally, I encourage all families to review the Westlake City Schools Profile. It is filled with lots of information related to our school district.
Have a wonderful week!

Midyear Transcripts - Counselors will be in the senior English classrooms the week of the 22 to walk seniors through the process of requesting their first semester grades (known as midyear transcripts) sent to the colleges they've applied to. There is no additional cost or parent signatures necessary for midyear transcripts.
Scholarships - First semester has focused on getting into college and in second semester the conversation transitions to how to pay for it. Local scholarship applications will be available in March, but in the meantime we encourage seniors to check out the scholarship folder on the senior bulletin board in the counseling office for scholarship opportunities that have been brought to our attention. Additionally, students can utilize Naviance for a national scholarship search under the "colleges" tab.
January is School Board Recognition Month
