January 8, 2017
From Our Principal

Good morning WHS families,
It was great seeing the students briefly last week and we are looking forward to better weather moving forward.  There are many things to catch up on in the next few weeks.  As a reminder, the WHS exams take place on January 16, 17, 18.  The semester exam schedule is posted on the WHS website.  Please click here to view the schedule
We are excited to announce the Westlake High School Parent Forum to be held on January 17 from 6-8 pm.  We will have three speakers covering a variety of relevant topics. The sessions will be held in one hour increments.  Parents will have the ability to attend 2-one hour sessions.  Topics include, teenage anxiety, being a mindful parent, and internet safety.  More detailed information will be mailed out later this week.
Following the Parent Forum, we will host an open discussion in the Performing Arts Center regarding a proposed drug testing policy that may be implemented in the fall of 2018. We are looking for feedback from the community and want to answer any questions that Westlake families may have.  We will have representatives from schools that currently utilize a drug testing program, a representative from the testing company, Westlake Law enforcement and Westlake school administrators.  Our student health and wellness is always our focus.  We think it is time that we explore the topic of drug testing at Westlake High School.  I have provided a few examples of policies from our fellow conference schools. They can be found here and here.  I encourage you to look at their policies to get a view of what is going on in our neighboring districts.
As always, I encourage you to review the WHS announcements.  They are a great source of information that are updated daily.  Finally, I encourage all families to review the Westlake City Schools Profile.  It is filled with lots of information related to our school district.
Have a wonderful week!

Counselor's Corner

PSAT Results - Sophomores and juniors who took the PSAT in October have received their scores electronically from College Board! Scores were sent to the email students provided on their pre-administration card prior to the test. (More information on how to access your child's PSAT results can be found here). We anticipate getting paper scores soon and will go to students' classroom for a brief presentation on how to interpret their scores shortly after winter break. Students will also have access to a free online personalized planning kit based on their PSAT test results and are encouraged to take next steps towards college  planning with unique features on  www.collegeboard.org .

Application Deadline - If you have a senior applying to a college or university with a January 1st deadline, please check and make sure they've requested their transcripts from their school counselor before break begins. We will not be able to send transcripts over winter break!

Service Learning - Just a reminder that students are required to obtain 15 service learning hours each year (60 total hours to graduate)! If your child hasn't accumulated any hours yet this year we encourage them to consider ways they serve time while they have an abundance of it over winter break! There is a bulletin board in the counseling office with service opportunities and copies of the forms that need to be turned in to validate hours. Opportunities can also be found on the high school website.

Scholarships - First semester has focused on getting into college and in second semester the conversation transitions to how to pay for it. Local scholarship applications will be available in March, but in the meantime we encourage seniors to check out the scholarship folder on the senior bulletin board in the counseling office for scholarship opportunities that have been brought to our attention. Additionally, students can utilize Naviance for a national scholarship search under the "colleges" tab.

Career Development Corner

Did you know that Westlake High School has a Career Shadow Program for 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students? This is a great opportunity for students to gain first-hand knowledge about a specific career field.
