From Our Principal
Good morning WHS families,
Last week I reported that we have 7 National Merit Semi-Finalists. I am proud to report that that we also have 7 Commended Scholars from the National Merit Scholarship Program. The 7 commended students are Kimaya Bahkle, Avi Kirpekar, Lalitaditya Kulshreshtha, Gabriel Leonard, Connor Mahon, Patrick Smith, and Norah Wilson. These students scored in the top 50,000 of over 1.6 million students in the United States. That is nearly 5% of the senior class that was recognized by the National Merit Program. Amazing showing class of 2018!
It was great seeing families this week during conferences. I am glad that so many of you took advantage of meeting our staff and discussing your students. Conferences are still available for families this week on the 27th. Additionally, our teachers are always available via email as well should you have an immediate question.
I wanted to make families aware of our school profile. This document provides a terrific snapshot of what Westlake High School has to offer to our community members, our families, and universities. I strongly encourage you to take a review this document. Feel free to contact me with any questions that you may have.
A special thanks goes out to Mrs. Elias for getting our peer tutoring program up and running this year. Peer tutors went through an application process and were selected early this year. We offer peer tutoring before and after school as well as throughout the day. If you are interested in getting your student some extra assistance, I encourage you took at this option. Feel free to email Mrs. Elias with questions.
At previously mentioned, Westlake High School will have a delayed start on Wednesday, October 11. The seniors and freshmen will not have to report until 11:15 am. The sophomore and juniors will report to school at regular time and will be administered the PSAT test.
Please refer to the PSAT student guide that is available on the school counseling webpage. It provides a great resource for our students as they begin the PSAT process.
Finally, this week is spirit week and concludes with the pep assembly, the rose arch ceremony, the parade, the football game, and our homecoming dance on Saturday, September 30. While these events are action packed and make our week filled with excitement, I encourage all families to take the opportunity to talk with their child about responsible decision making. Finally, please check your students attire before they come to the high school for our spirit days. Those that push the envelope too far, may be calling you for a change of clothing! Thank you in advance for the support.
As a reminder the WHS announcements can be found here.
Should you have any questions or concerns about any of the information above, please feel free to reach out to us.

CONFERENCE AVAILABILITY -
All counselors will be available during parent-teacher conferences on Wednesday, Sept. 27. If you'd like to meet with your child's counselor please sign up
for an appointment. We will have availability throughout the evening to start the conversation about your child's four-year plan, review transcripts, or discuss the college application process.
Colleges visits allow juniors and seniors to hear directly from admissions representatives what their school is looking for and ask questions in a small group setting! Often the college reps will be one of the readers for the applications from WHS so it's a great opportunity to put a face to the name! Student must register in
. This week's visits include:
Monday, Sept. 25
U. of South Florida, Ursuline College, Cleveland State
Tuesday, Sept. 26
College of Wooster, Kent State, Lake Erie College
Wed., Sept. 27
University of Toledo, Miami University
Thursday, Sept. 28
University of Akron, School of Advertising Art, Marietta College
- On Wednesday, October 11th all sophomores and juniors will take the PSAT. The PSAT is a practice SAT and a good opportunity for students to get a feel for higher stakes testing. It can also assist students in identifying focal points for studying for the ACT or SAT based on the feedback of their strengths and weaknesses from the PSAT. This is especially helpful for juniors as they will go on to take the ACT at WHS in March. Additionally, juniors may qualify for the National Merit Scholarship (given to approximately 8,200 students annually) based on their PSAT score.

As the new Career Shadow Facilitator at Westlake High School, I would like to extend an invite to all parents to be a part of the career exploration experience for Westlake High School students.
There are three opportunities for parents and the community to get involved:
- Career Shadowing offers the students an experience at your place of employment. This can be a half or full day experience. The student would shadow you and/or your colleagues and become aware of the daily activities of a specific career.
- As a Career Speaker, you would come to Westlake High School and speak with a group of students that have an interest in your career field.
- Lastly, you may allow a group of students to come to your place of employment for a Field Trip to tour and speak with various employees.
Exploring careers allows students to make better, informed decisions about their future. If you would like to be involved, please contact me at email@example.com with your name, career field, company name, address and phone number. My goal is to establish a comprehensive database that I can use for our students. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
