Monday Afternoon Update

While the sun is out and melting some of the snow and ice, expect all of the moisture to refreeze overnight, causing more issues on the roadways this evening and into tomorrow morning.

Below we have a look at the forecast, what it means for schools, and the potential for busted pipes.

Closures

  • All major school districts that impact Westlake, including Westlake Academy, are closed on Tuesday
  • Westlake's Town Hall and Municipal Court are also closed Tuesday
  • Trash and recycling will almost assuredly be impacted this week. Once we confirm official delays, we will notify you via email, on our social media pages, and our website. Please note, it is possible due to the ever-changing conditions, the schedule may change more than once before Thursday's originally scheduled pick-up. We ask that you please stay tuned to our Town's communications to ensure you set your garbage out on the proper day.

Road Conditions

  • Roads are still very dangerous around Westlake, despite the thawing today
  • Temperatures will remain below freezing through tomorrow afternoon, causing roads to re-freeze overnight
  • The National Weather Service is calling for freezing fog for Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, which could cause additional problems on the roads

Busted Pipes

As the ice begins to thaw, we expect to see an issue with busted pipes, which is very common during a winter weather event like this. If you experience a busted pipe, here's what you need to know:

  • What should I do if I have a busted pipe? The first thing is to quickly turn off the water in your entire home. The box is usually beside your driveway, near the street, underground. To see how to turn off the water yourself, please watch this short video that will walk you through it.
  • What if I can't turn the water off myself? Then immediately call 9-1-1, and our Westlake Fire-EMS team will respond to help.
  • How do I know I have a busted pipe if I can't see the water leaking? Changes in water pressure, water discoloration, strange sounds when turning on water, water marks on ceiling/floors are all indicators that you may have a busted pipe.
  • What if my fire sprinkler busts? Same as any other pipe, either try and turn it off yourself by using the valve in your garage or call 9-1-1 to help.
  • Should I drain my fire sprinkler line to help prevent a busted pipe? NO, we do not recommend you turn off or drain your fire sprinkler if there is no existing issue. A fire could cause more damage than a busted pipe.

***If there's a water issue at your home, you can contact Westlake's Public Works on-call number at 817-490-5731.
