Christmas Joy Offering

This coming Sunday, December 11, we will receive the Joy Offering as well as our regular donations. There will be offering envelopes in your bulletins, and a designation on the website to make a gift to this PC(USA) Special Offering that provides assistance to retired church workers and scholarships for college students of color. You can also mail checks to the office designated for the Joy Offering.

December Youth Group Activity

We are amending our previously scheduled December 11 afternoon activity to Sunday, December 11, 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Youth will gather to participate in morning worship by lighting the Advent wreath candles. After worship, we will gather in the youth room for a taco bar, games, check-ins, and then watching Ironman 3 together.

For any and all questions, call/text Rebecca Barnes at 513-280-0582 or email [email protected].

Poinsettias

This year instead of ordering red poinsettias, the Worship Committee is inviting everyone to pick out one that you like, and bring it on Sunday, December 11, to decorate the chancel. We hope to have a diverse array of sizes, colors and styles of poinsettias to reflect our value of diversity and inclusion.

December Sunday School Class for Adults and Youth

Dr. Amy Pauw has graciously agreed to offer an in-person Bible study the first three weeks of December from 9:45 - 10:45 a.m. in the back building’s Gathering Room. The study will be based on Dr. Tyler Mayfield’s new book, Father Abraham’s Many Children: The Bible in a World of Religious Difference. Amy and Tyler are colleagues at Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary. Mayfield looks at the familiar Bible stories of Cain and Abel, Ishmael and Isaac, and Esau and Jacob, and shows how to read them in a way that welcomes religious difference and diversity. You do not need to have the book, nor have read it, to participate in this wonderful opportunity for learning and conversation. It is a perfect topic for youth and adults. If you cannot to come to all classes, come when you can.

An added bonus: Patti and Jack Marcum will have coffee and tea ready at 9:45 a.m. for folks to take to Sunday school or for those who prefer time with other CHPCers for general conversation instead. That group will meet in the church office, also in the back building.

Christmas Concert, Sunday, December 18

On Sunday, December 18, at 2 p.m., Amy, Doug, Frank and David will present a program of favorite Christmas music. The concert is free and open to all, so bring a friend. A light reception will follow, so come for the music and stay for the fellowship.

Calling All Readers

We are doing a lessons and carols service for Christmas Eve this year. We will need several Scripture readers to take part in the service. We could also use a liturgist or two for the Longest Night/Blue Christmas service on Wednesday, December 21.

Please contact Peggy or the church office if you plan to attend these services and would like to lead in worship.

Giving Back for Advent

The Interfaith Coalition for Immigrant Justice is organizing a holiday event to benefit La Casita. They have asked many churches to participate. They are collecting specific food items, specific children's books in Spanish, Walmart gift cards, and more. We have narrowed the list to just a few items that can be brought to church each Sunday of Advent. The fourth Sunday's donation will benefit UCHM.

December 11 - Bring canned vegetables

December 18 - Bring cooking oil (to be donated to UCHM)

If you would like the entire list of items, please reach out to Claudia Foulkes or Tricia Lloyd-Sidle.

Children’s Sunday School on Zoom

Children of all ages are invited to come Zoom with us from 9:45 to 10:15 a.m. every Sunday. We will gather for music, Bible stories, crafts, and more. Throughout the fall we will hear stories about Moses, Ruth, David, and other ancestors in the faith. Our crazy friend Sid is back too. Join us each week to see how Sid, once again, has fundamentally misunderstood the Bible story.

Never a dull moment in children’s Sunday school! Teachers are Jerry Van Marter, Eva Stimson, Bev Machin, and Luke Van Marter (aka Sid). Please let us know if you would like to join our teaching team. Email Jerry to get on the list to receive weekly Zoom invitations and other announcements.
