Adult/Youth Mission Study April 16, 23, and 30

Why are mission trips and other activities so often more effective at satisfying church members than making a lasting difference in the world? How can we get away from consumer-oriented “selfie mission”? These are some of the issues that will be discussed in an online study for adults and youth the last three Sundays in April. We will discuss the book Freeing Congregational Mission: A Practical Vision for Companionship, Cultural Humility, and Co-Development, by Hunter Farrell and Balajiedlang Khyllep. We will gather at

5 p.m. on Zoom each Sunday, April 16, 23, and 30.

Co-authors Hunter and Bala will be helping lead the study. In the final session, April 30, participants in CHPC’s Guatemalan Connection will help us examine our partnership with churches in Guatemala’s Estoreño Presbytery in light of the vision for mission expressed in the book.

Hunter and Ruth Farrell and their family were active in CHPC for many years before moving to Pittsburgh, where Hunter is director of Pittsburgh Theological Seminary’s World Mission Initiative. Nurture Committee is inviting people from other congregations in Mid-Kentucky Presbytery to participate in the study. Participants are encouraged to read the book (available on Amazon), but reading it is not required to participate in the discussion.

Notes from Building Use Discussion on March 27, 2023

Attendees: Barbara Hedspeth, Soni Castleberry, Peggy Hinds, Patti Marcum, Shannon Langley, Ben Langley, Tricia Lloyd-Sidle, Don Mead, Carol Mead, Doug Yeager, Eva Stimson, and Alan Pauw

1. Discussion began with prayer.

2. Alan opened with information about recent unsolicited requests for use of CHPC buildings from outside parties. Those included the Village School; Blue Dog Bakery; a math tutoring group; and the African Christian Fellowship.

3. Some discussion was devoted to logistical and practical costs associated with each building use request, namely, staffing, security, insurance, clean-up, and repairs.

4. Some participants mentioned that CHPC should first define its mission or vision of building use before accepting requests for long-term or full-time use.

5. Eva and Barbara said that possible follow-up might be to contact churches which already make multiple use of their buildings, including Douglas Blvd Church (Derek Penwell) and All Peoples Unitarian.

6. The group noted revenue raising possibilities could include renting space for office use by professionals.

7. Some commented that requests for one-time uses might be approved even while CHPC tries to form its vision for the buildings.

8. We were left with a couple questions:

a. How would CHPC build consensus around a vision?

b. Can we find (look for) outside groups that share our vision/mission to make a good fit?
