Polly Johnson's Celebration of Life

The Celebration of Polly Johnson's Life will be at 2 p.m., September 9 in the sanctuary. Her family is requesting that everyone in attendance wear bright colors. To view Polly's obituary, click here.

Thank you, from Todd & Jeanne-Marie Rogers

We want to thank everyone for holding our son Jake and his wife Anna in prayer through a difficult time. We did not want to provide details until they did. We can now share that Jake was outside of their apartments in Chicago around midnight, Friday, August 19, when he heard loud voices and then gunshots. He dove for cover in their entryway only to discover that he had been shot in the right shoulder and could not use his arm. There does not appear to be a motive behind this shooting.

Jake suffered injury to an artery (repaired) and nerve damage along with a wound on his cheek and a broken rib. He can currently move his forearm up and down and has some tingling in his hand and fingers. We are hopeful for his recovery. Your continued prayers are appreciated as we navigate his recovery and understanding of what his new normal will be.

We are grateful that it was not worse. We are confident in the Love of God to sustain us. We are glad to be back in the care of our family at St. Marks.

Peace and Grace to you all,

Jeanne-Marie and Todd

What Values Motivate Participation in Faith Communities?

What motivates people—especially young people—to join a faith community? How can we be the kind of faith community that young people could be motivated to join? In a series of

sermons this fall, Peggy will be exploring eight values that 13-to-25-year-olds are looking for in organizations, according to Springtide Research Institute:

  • Authenticity
  • Accountability
  • Inclusivity
  • Hospitality
  • Impact
  • Belonging
  • Growthful
  • Meaningful

These eight values not only help us understand what young people are looking for in a faith community, they also shine a light on what our congregation values. What values do we share with young people today? Where is there a disconnect?

For those interested in making a deeper dive into these values, Mark and Peggy will lead a Zoom conversation each Sunday evening, September 11 – October 23, at 5:00 pm. They will be using the book Meaning Making, published by the Springtide Research Institute.

Children’s Sunday School Begins September 11

Children of all ages are invited to come Zoom with us, beginning at 9:45 a.m. on Sunday,September 11! We will gather on Zoom for 30 minutes every Sunday for music, Bible stories, crafts, and more. Throughout the fall we will hear stories about caring for God’s

creation, Moses, Ruth, David, and other ancestors in the faith.

Our crazy friend Sid is back too. Join us the first Sunday to see how Sid, once again, has fundamentally misunderstood the Bible story.

Never a dull moment in children’s Sunday school! Teachers are Jerry Van Marter, Eva Stimson, Bev Machin, and Luke Van Marter (aka Sid). We could use more help. Please let us know if you would like to join our teaching team. Email Jerry to get on the list to receive weekly Zoom invitations and other announcements.
