CHPC to Receive Spirit Award

Crescent Hill Presbyterian Church will receive a Spirit Award from the Crescent Hill Neighborhood Council on Thursday, September 5, 6:30 p.m. at Peterson Dumesnil House. This is quite an honor, and CHPC members are encouraged to attend. Pastor Tami will accept the award, and former pastors Jane Larsen-Wigger and Mark and Barbara Barnes have been invited to attend.

Cancellation of Visit by the Lara Family

There will be NO gathering at Casa Castleberry this Saturday with the Lara family. Their visit was cancelled due to a Covid outbreak amongst their friends in Lexington where they were going to stay. Instead, pray for their friends’ recovery and safe travel for Carlos, Nora, and Ana as they(or God) have shifted their visit to see friends in Milwaukee WI instead. As Ana said, “God works in mysterious ways.”

Meet the Gardeners September 8!

Interested in learning more about the Master Gardeners and their work on the grounds of our church? Please plan to attend worship on Sunday, September 8, followed by a “Meet the Gardeners” reception in Henry Young Fellowship Hall. This will also be an opportunity to welcome and celebrate our new Music Director, Aaron Davidson, who begins his work with us September 8.

Beautiful changes are already noticeable in the weeks since the CHPC Session and the Jefferson County Master Gardener Association (JCMGA) voted to enter a partnership. These skilled gardeners, including CHPC member Claudia Foulkes, have been busy planting, weeding, and sprucing up areas, beginning in front of the church. They bring energy and ideas that fit with CHPC’s mission, including a facelift for the church’s meditation garden, a commitment to caring for the earth, and garden-centered activities for children and families.

Come meet some of the gardeners on September 8 and help us shape a vision for this exciting collaboration.

In just a week Spirit of Sophia is hosting a 4-week study circle for women exploring Christine Valters Paintner's book, The Love of Thousands. We will meet in The Gathering Room from 6:30 to 8:00 pm on Thursdays in September.

All women who attend Crescent Hill Presbyterian Church are invited to join us at 50% off our program fee. To register, go to the following link and mention CHPC, but do not complete payment. A special invoice will then be sent to you.

Thank you and we hope to see you there!

Choir Practice Resumes

First choir practice will be on Thursday, September 12, at 7:00 p.m. in the Choir Room. Whether you have sung in the choir before or not, please come and help us make a joyful noise!

Items for UCHM

There is a need for someone to transport two bins of collected items (canned goods, personal supplies, and Christmas wrapping paper) to UCHM (United Crescent Hill Ministries). The bins are in the hall outside the church office. Please return the bins to CHPC after supplies are delivered. Thank you very much!

Prayer and Action for Middle East

Please join us for prayer each Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. on Zoom. Email Soni Castleberry at soni.castleberry@gmail.com to get the link for the week and to be added to our group email list for regular communication.

The Thursday morning prayer group invites you to sign a letter to Representative Morgan McGarvey. This is the second letter we have written, this time at the request of the Louisville Ceasefire Coalition.

Need Reimbursement for a Church

-Related Purchase?

Have you ever purchased something for the church and wanted reimbursement? You may recall that, prior to COVID, you would complete a payment voucher form (on a blue half-sheet) available in the church office and in the narthex and submit it to the treasurer, who would then write you a reimbursement check.

We will again be requesting payment vouchers to help the treasurer’s recordkeeping. Paper copies of the form are available in the church office and the narthex. Or go to the church website, open the menu for “Our Life Together” and scroll down to “Resources”; click on “Resources” to open a page where you can download a payment voucher. You may leave completed forms in the treasurer’s mailbox in the church office or give them directly to the treasurer (Jack Marcum).

Church Treasurer Position

Jack Marcum, CHPC’s treasurer, will be retiring from this position by the end of the year. We are currently seeking someone interested in this volunteer position. For more information, please contact the church office at office@crescenthill.church or at 502-893-5381.

What Presbyterians Believe about Biblical Interpretation

In recent decades, General Assemblies have provided essential guidelines for Bible reading and interpretation. To put those guidelines simply, “Read the text, in its historic and literary contexts, within the broader biblical context, and look for appropriate points of application in order to live it in the here and now.”

(1) First, in order to understand the meanings of Scripture, we need to be reading Scripture.

(2) Second, we need to read in context. Each of the Bible’s books was written in a particular genre by a particular person at a particular time for particular readers to provide particular information that addressed particular concerns. The first challenge is to try to identify as accurately as possible what those particulars were. Some books are written like history texts (such as Chronicles), while others read more like memoirs (the four Gospels), letters (Romans), poems (Psalms), or sermons (Hebrews). Some writings assemble a mix of genres (such as the parables and miracle stories found in the Gospels).

(3) We also need to read within the broader biblical context. Having considered the intended meaning of a particular text, we need to compare that text with other biblical texts that address related subjects. A basic Bible study library can facilitate such study. When comparing Scripture passages, some apparent contradictions will emerge. Such dilemmas are usually solved when each passage is studied in its own context. Ultimately the topic needs to be considered in the context of the broadest biblical themes. Special weight ought to be given to the “rule of love” — that is, “How does this passage help the reader better fulfill Scripture’s highest law to ‘Love your Lord with all your heart, your soul, your mind, and your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself?’ ”

(4) Finally, we should hear the text through the voices of the church through the centuries. The work of many scholars’ interpretations can inform our study as we read their commentaries, study guides, and theological treatises. The church’s Confessions are also essential.
