General Assembly Overture
Our Session endorsed an overture to General Assembly (G.A.) related to the conflict in Israel-Palestine. The overture calls on the G.A. to begin focused engagement with General Electric and Palantir Technologies Inc. on practices of the companies that may contribute to conflicts and human rights violations in the Middle East and elsewhere.
Eva Stimson and Soni Castleberry were CHPC’s commissioners at the February 24 meeting of Mid-Kentucky Presbytery (MKP) when the overture that our Session endorsed last month was considered. Jerry Van Marter, stated clerk, informed MKP attendees that enough presbyteries have already passed the overture; therefore, it already is going to the General Assembly. MKP’s approval would provide added support. One elder representative from First Frankfort, and another of the church’s members, spoke against the overture. Jerry and our elder, Don Mead, corrected some misinformation that had been given. Thankfully, MKP strongly voted to approve the overture. Our Session is pleased to have played an important role in this process and looks forward to the overture being considered at G.A.
The goal of focused engagement, the overture says, is “moving these companies away from actions that create human harm, are a barrier to peace, and violate human rights.” The overture notes that military items produced by the companies have been linked to human-rights violations in Israel-Palestine and elsewhere.
If you would like any additional information about the overture, any of the folks mentioned would be happy to talk with you. Please click for a copy of the overture.
