From the Pastor
This Sunday we will be looking at Isaiah 40:1-11 and Mark 1:1-8. Together these two passages point us to comfort and hope, which is our theme for the first Sunday in Advent. In Isaiah, God’s comfort comes to God’s people after 70 years in Babylonian exile. In Mark, hope begins with the gospel of God’s good news in the wilderness. As Fred Craddock writes, the gospel begins “in the wastelands of a fallen world.”
For this is where the voice of hope, “Comfort, O comfort my people,” cries out: In the Holy Land, where 1.7 million people in Gaza have been displaced, and into the increasing antisemitism and political extremism of our time.
As we lean into the hope of this Advent season, may we hear the words of John the Baptist asking us to turn around again, and may we allow the grace and mercy of God to transform us.
On Sunday, we’ll also hear music from the Louisville Dulcimer Society, which will lift our spirits during these darker days of December.
See you Sunday!
Paul
