It’s Not Too Late to Pledge!

Sunday, October 27, was Commitment Sunday at CHPC. Thank you to all who have already made a pledge to God and the church to give in 2025, in gratitude for God’s abundant blessings. Your gifts of money and time enable our ministries to continue!

If you have not yet made your commitment, please prayerfully consider what you can give next year and bring your completed pledge card to church or mail it to the office. If you need a pledge card, please contact the church office, or pick one up in the narthex on Sunday.

Thanksgiving Meal Opens OPS/NOW Meetings

Come celebrate Thanksgiving early on Wednesday, November 13, at 6:00 p.m. Everyone is invited to gather in the Henry Young Fellowship Hall for a Thanksgiving-themed meal, followed by the monthly meeting of the NOW and OPS committees. Enjoy some turkey and dressing with your church family and stay, if you wish, for continued discussion of our church community and mission.

Our discussions will take place in two committees:

· OPS (Operations) Committee—Guides the work of stewardship and giving, finances, budget, personnel, upkeep of building and grounds.

· NOW Committee—Guides programmatic work of the congregation, including music and worship, Christian formation, earth care, gun violence prevention, garden ministry, outreach to the community, Guatemala partnership and overseas mission.

Even if you are not sure about serving on a “committee,” please join us for the food and a chance to get to know others in our church community.

Friendsgathering, November 9

Everyone is invited to drop by the church for “Friendsgathering,” Saturday, November 9, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. This is an opportunity to connect with folks in the neighborhood, celebrate earth’s abundance, and learn more about the partnerships between the Master Gardeners, Sustainable Agriculture of Louisville, and Crescent Hill Presbyterian Church.

There will be a bake sale and other items for sale, apple cider, giveaways (seeds, bulbs, fall harvest recipes), interactive table displays, and crafts for kids. CHPC will have a display inviting church members and visitors to tell us how our church can support the needs of the community.

Interested in helping with this fun event or contributing an item for the bake sale? Please contact Claudia Foulkes at 502-939-4129.

Guns to Gardens, November 10

The prophet Isaiah offers a vision of a peaceful world in which weapons of destruction are transformed into gardening tools. Guns to Gardens Louisville, an organization birthed at Crescent Hill Presbyterian Church, is taking another small step toward bringing Isaiah’s vision to reality by offering our fifth gun safe-surrender event.

The next Guns to Gardens event will be on Sunday, November 10, from 2 to 4 p.m., at Grace Hope Presbyterian Church, 702 E. Breckinridge St., in the Smoketown neighborhood. This is an opportunity for anyone with unwanted guns to dispose of them safely and anonymously, with the assurance that the weapons will not be resold or used in acts of violence. Our first four events brought in a total of 74 guns to be cut into pieces with chop saws. The pieces are being forged into tools, art, and jewelry by local blacksmith Craig Kaviar.

If you have guns that you no longer want or need, or if you know someone who does, please bring them and help us “turn swords into plowshares” on November 10. Help us spread the word about this opportunity! For more information about Guns to Gardens, contact Eva Stimson at Eva.stimson@gmail.com or Soni Castleberry at Soni.castleberry@gmail.com.

DID YOU KNOW?

What Presbyterians Believe About the Advent:

Think about the first and last words of Scripture. The book of Genesis opens with “In the beginning …” (Gen. 1:1). And the book of Revelation closes with “Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!” (Rev. 22:20), followed only by a postscript extending Christ’s grace to all the saints. The season of Advent brings together both ends of the Bible.

On the one hand, we may think of Advent as a beginning—the start of the new liturgical year, a fresh opportunity to immerse ourselves in the great story of our salvation through Jesus Christ, born in Bethlehem. On the other hand, Advent points to an ending—the consummation of all things when Christ will return in glory to bring righteousness, justice, and peace. How does the season of Advent balance at this threshold of time?
