Commitment Sunday—November 2

This is the time of year when we think about what it means to be a good steward of the gifts God has given us. As a church community, we have been abundantly blessed over the past year. Now we are invited to give back by pledging a percentage of our time, talents, and financial resources to the church.

As Pastor Tami reminded us in a letter to all members, “The amount of your pledge is not the most important factor. The discipline of giving back to God is an act of worship; showing faith and love is what is most important.”

Please prayerfully consider what you can give. On Sunday, November 2, there will be a time during the worship service to bring your pledge card forward. You may also drop it by the church office or mail it to the church. Thank you for your generous gifts!

For All the Saints

Please join us for a potluck lunch following worship on Sunday, November 2. This will be a time to share food and conversation and memories of Bob Abrams, Don Mead, and other saints who have left us in recent years. All are invited to bring food and stories to share—or just come and listen and be inspired.

Highlights of the October 22, 2025, Session Meeting

Among other actions, the Session:

  • Scheduled a called meeting of Session to talk with people interested in becoming members of CHPC. (Session voted on October 26 to receive Richard Myers and Luke and Kaitlyn Giordano, with daughter Harper, as members.)
  • Heard a report on activities of Pastor Tami, including work on the 2026 budget, looking into presbytery grants to renovate church facilities, and developing an outdoor banner to invite the community to worship services during Advent.
  • Heard a progress report on getting a base for the art piece being created by Craig Kaviar for the front plaza.
  • Appointed Soni Castleberry and Ben Langley to meet with Stephen Bartlett to review the agreement between the church and Sustainable Agriculture of Louisville (SAL), which is up for renewal.
  • Discussed creating a dedicated space at the church for Guns to Gardens Louisville to store signs, tents, and other equipment.
  • Approved the financial report for August 2025 from Treasurer Aaron Baer.
  • Elected Eva Stimson and Soni Castleberry as commissioners to the November 8 meeting of Mid-Kentucky Presbytery.

Book Study

Please join us Wednesday mornings, from 10:00 to 11:15, on Zoom, for study and discussion of the book "Christ in the Rubble: Faith, the Bible, and the Genocide in Gaza," by Munther Isaac.

The first meeting was October 29, but new folks are welcome anytime. Any questions can be directed to Claudia Foulkes, 502-939-4129. Please email Claudia at Cfoulkes3@gmail.com to get the Zoom link and be added to the group email list for regular communication.

One of our Mission Partners, Spirit of Sophia, is hosting its annual Women Create Fundraiser and Tenth Year Celebration on November 16 at All People's Church in Louisville. If you are interested in supporting this ministry, you can purchase tickets at https://spiritofsophia.org/women-create-annual-fundraiser/.

Prayer and Action for Middle East

Feel free to join us Thursdays on Zoom, in-person, or both. This group has enabled such support for one another as we all struggle to cope with the tragedies in the Middle East and the on and off cease fires and prisoner releases. We would be grateful to have others join us. Email Soni at soni.castleberry@gmail.com to get the Zoom link and be added to the group email list for regular communication.

Guns to Gardens Louisville

Safe-Disposal Opportunity, November 9, 2–4 p.m.

The prophet Isaiah offers a vision of a peaceful world in which weapons of destruction are transformed into gardening tools. Crescent Hill Presbyterian Church is joining with other faith and community groups in a small step toward bringing Isaiah’s vision to reality by offering our 7th gun safe-disposal opportunity.

The event will be on Sunday, November 9, from 2 to 4 p.m., at Lynnhurst United Church of Christ, 4401 Taylor Blvd. This will be our first event in South Louisville! It is an opportunity for anyone with unwanted guns to dispose of them safely and anonymously, with the assurance that the weapons will not be resold or be used in violence.

The gun pieces are forged into tools, art, jewelry, and household items by local blacksmith Craig Kaviar and local woodworker Matthew Karr of Karr Custom Furniture.

If you have guns you no longer want or need, or if you know someone who does, please bring them and help us “turn swords into plowshares.” Spread the word about this opportunity! For more information about Guns to Gardens Louisville, contact Eva Stimson or Soni Castleberry.

What Presbyterians Believe about Confessions of Faith

At the heart of all confessions is the earliest confession of the New Testament church, “Jesus is Lord.” (Strictly speaking, therefore, Christians confess not what but in whom they believe.) But the church discovered very early that in order to protect this simple confession from misunderstanding and misuse, it had to talk about the relation between Jesus and the God of Israel, and between Jesus and the Holy Spirit.

The earliest Christological confession became a Trinitarian confession. That led to further reflection on biblical witness to the reality and work of God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit in the past, present, and future history of the world in general, in the particular history of the people of God, and in the life of every individual Christian. Moreover, the church could not talk about the “lordship” of Jesus without also talking about the claim the triune God has on the lives of people in their personal and social relationships in the church and in the world. The confession “Jesus is Lord” necessarily led to the development of a full theology and ethic. https://pcusa.org/sites/default/files/boc2016.pdf page vii
