Pentecost Sunday -- this Sunday May 24.

We have several invitations:
  • Please wear red.

  • After church we will be celebrating the graduation of Isabel Husk from Assumption. Isabel will be attending Coastal Carolina University to study marine science. She will be accompanied by her mom Kate, dad Ian, and grandmother Marcia Myers.

  • We will also be taking a photo after church of everyone and have a drum circle with some singing, as well.

SUMMER MUSIC SERIES

Mark your calendars for Friday, June 5th at 6:00 p.m. Come enjoy the first of 4 Summer Music concerts with some great music with Mundo Brew, a local band (with our own Doug Yeager!)

Join us for a night under the stars as we gather in our front plaza to listen to great local sounds and partake in a variety of local food trucks perfect for a warm summer evening. Bring a blanket or chair. Limited seating is available. Please share and invite.

THE CHPC GARDEN IS CALLING YOU

Sustainable Agriculture of Louisville (SAL) welcomes CHPC members to join gardening work circles. On Thursdays from 5:30 p.m. on, we will engage in group gardening sessions. Relationships will be built and knowledge will be shared, not to mention that the produce from the garden will be shared.

Just think! In the midst of this time of national and global chaos and struggles, you can spend time in the garden with other lovers of gardening. You will find it a real antidote for body and mind. Please contact Stephen Bartlett (SAL Director) to connect: call text or email: 502-415-1080, estebanbartlett@gmail.com to join the garden circles at a level you have time for! Or tell Stephen that you are interested but Thursdays are not convenient for you, and he will consider other times

SAL has crop work sessions at other sites in and out of Louisville, such as the Three Sisters Crop production at Barr farmers and at garden and farm sites where immigrant growers produce crops. On occasion, surplus produce from the SAL CHPC garden is added to the Master Gardener’s production provided to local food pantries.

CELEBRATING SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE OF LOUISVILLE’S (SAL)   PARTNERSHIP WITH CHPC (from 2001 to 2026)!!

 SAL, or “salt” in Spanish, is grateful to CHPC for our longstanding partnership--from the John Leake Memorial garden space at CHPC to the world.

When children, marveling at the idea that anyone with hunger, appetite or need could eat or prepare tea from plants in the garden, they asked who “owned” the garden. The answer, “No one ‘owns’ the garden. It is God’s garden.” Moments of silent revelation typically followed this conversation.

This month the SAL circle celebrates the 19 seasons of Summer Garden Camp that SAL and CHPC provided to hundreds of children and counselors. Camps started in 2001 and continued until the pandemic. Since then, one brief season has been held.

Former garden camp participants tell SAL that they have become lifelong gardeners, have enjoyed cooking meals from camp recipes, have become community organizers focused on food justice, have even become farmers--the cups of camp legacies runneth over! We are grateful to CHPC for supporting those memorable SAL camps for 19 seasons!

Now SAL has made the difficult decision to call a finale to the garden camp program, but who knows what God has in mind for the future.

Rescheduled: Guns to Gardens Louisville's Information/Volunteer Meeting

Guns to Gardens Louisville will not have its volunteer planning meeting this month as previously announced. Instead, G2GL will meet on Zoom at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 26.

If you would like to join us on Zoom please email Soni Castleberry at soni.castleberry@gmail.com and she will send you the link. This month's agenda will be restricted to final plans for the May 31 gun safe-disposal opportunity. All are welcome to join us and learn what you can do to help with this important community event.

Sunday Greeters

We are in need of additional Sunday greeters, once each month or more. If you are available to help, please reach out to Lucy Steilberg at 502-821-7735 or at lucyd.steilberg@gmail.com.

Mahjong Group

Come on out and join the Mahjong Group! The members are having fun learning and playing Mahjong. Please feel free to join in.

Our next meet-up is Tuesday, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Prayer Group for the Middle East

Feel free to join us Thursdays on Zoom, in-person, or both. This group has enabled such support for one another as we all struggle to cope with the tragedies in the Middle East and the on and off cease fires and prisoner releases. The first Thursday of each month the group will meet in person. Please reach out to Soni for locations.

We would be grateful to have others join us. Email Soni at soni.castleberry@gmail.com to get the Zoom link and be added to the group email list for regular communication.

DID YOU KNOW? What Presbyterians Believe

Confession of Belhar, September 1986
part 2 of 3
(Note: This is a translation of the original Afrikaans text of the confession as it was adopted by the synod of the Dutch Reformed Mission Church in South Africa in 1986. In 1994 the Dutch Reformed Mission Church and the Dutch Reformed Church in Africa united to form the Uniting Reformed Church in Southern Africa (URCSA). This inclusive language text was prepared by the Office of Theology and Worship, Presbyterian Church (USA).)
3. We believe
• that God has entrusted the church with the message of reconciliation in and through Jesus Christ; that the church is called to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world, that the church is called blessed because it is a peacemaker, that the church is witness both by word and by deed to the new heaven and the new earth in which righteousness dwells.
• that God’s lifegiving Word and Spirit has conquered the powers of sin and death, and therefore also of irreconciliation and hatred, bitterness and enmity, that God’s lifegiving Word and Spirit will enable the church to live in a new obedience which can open new possibilities of life for society and the world;
• that the credibility of this message is seriously affected and its beneficial work obstructed when it is proclaimed in a land which professes to be Christian, but in which the enforced separation of people on a racial basis promotes and perpetuates alienation, hatred and enmity;
• that any teaching which attempts to legitimate such forced separation by appeal to the gospel, and is not prepared to venture on the road of obedience and reconciliation, but rather, out of prejudice, fear, selfishness and unbelief, denies in advance the reconciling power of the gospel, must be considered ideology and false doctrine.
Therefore, we reject any doctrine
• which, in such a situation sanctions in the name of the gospel or of the will of God the forced separation of people on the grounds of race and color and thereby in advance obstructs and weakens the ministry and experience of reconciliation in Christ.
