Adult/Youth Mission Study April 16, 23, and 30

Why are mission trips and other activities so often more effective at satisfying church members than making a lasting difference in the world? How can we get away from consumer-oriented “selfie mission”? These are some of the issues that will be discussed in an online study for adults and youth the last three Sundays in April. We will discuss the book Freeing Congregational Mission: A Practical Vision for Companionship, Cultural Humility, and Co-Development, by Hunter Farrell and Balajiedlang Khyllep. We will gather at

5 p.m. on Zoom each Sunday, April 16, 23, and 30.

Co-authors Hunter and Bala will be helping lead the study. In the final session, April 30, participants in CHPC’s Guatemalan Connection will help us examine our partnership with churches in Guatemala’s Estoreño Presbytery in light of the vision for mission expressed in the book.

Hunter and Ruth Farrell and their family were active in CHPC for many years before moving to Pittsburgh, where Hunter is director of Pittsburgh Theological Seminary’s World Mission Initiative. Nurture Committee is inviting people from other congregations in Mid-Kentucky Presbytery to participate in the study. Participants are encouraged to read the book (available on Amazon), but reading it is not required to participate in the discussion.

Message from the Pastor

Dear Beloved of God,

The Session mailed a letter to you on Monday, April 10. I hope you have received it, read it, and are prayerfully considering the content. The Session desires that their letter be a catalyst for conversation and healing.

On Sunday, April 16, the Session will host a forum for anyone who would like to discuss the letter. Session members will be in the Henry Young Fellowship Hall after worship until 1:00 p.m. (If helpful, the discussion could go longer than 1 hour.) You are welcome to bring lunch and eat during the discussion.

As your transitional pastor, I pray that you will take this opportunity to express your feelings about past events and turn your focus to the congregation’s future. The events of the past two years are a part of who you are as Crescent Hill Presbyterian Church. The history of these events will stay with you, just like all the memories you carry. However, they do not have to define who you are becoming. That is up to you as you respond to the Spirit’s movement.

May God give you wisdom and peace of mind as you consider the Session’s invitation and your response by creating a time for healing conversation on April 16.

(If you have not yet received the mailing, click here for the cover letter and here for the Session's letter.

Peace,

Peggy

April Youth and Young Adult News

We had lots of fun sheltering from the tornado on Wednesday, April 5, in the Comfy Cow back storage room as we played Uno and ate ice cream for our "spring break" youth group hang-out! That's one for the memory books. Now that we've survived that fun adventure, we're already planning for our next one, just a few weeks away.

Sunday April 23, 2023, 12:00 p.m. meet at church, 5:30 p.m., pick up at Cedar Ridge.

After the Earth Day worship service at Crescent Hill Presbyterian--which all are welcome to attend--we will meet in the youth room to begin our spring retreat, around 12:00 p.m.

We'll gather at noon for a simple lunch of sandwiches, chips and fruit in the youth room and some gathering games like ping pong, foosball, cards, sharing highs and lows. Then we will leave from there to drive out to Cedar Ridge Camp (Routt Rd) for a day retreat. We likely will be based out of Cedar Ridge's Lakeside Pavilion (closest one to the entrance) as we explore, hike, play games, do archery, canoe, build a campfire, and share earth care themes while enjoying the great outdoors. We will end the afternoon with vegetarian and regular hot dogs and s'mores.

Youth are welcome to bring their own sports equipment (soccer balls, frisbees, archery bow/arrows) and/or any art/music/instruments/story-telling to share around the campfire. Please bring your own water bottle and a snack to share, and wear closed-toed shoes for walking in the woods!

Parents/guardians should pick up (or rideshare for picking up) their youth at Cedar Ridge Lakeside Pavilion at 5:30 p.m. (As always, feel free to let youth leaders know if your youth will need one of us to give them a ride back home.)

Parents - RSVP to Rebecca, Chris or Luiz if your young person can make it so we will know to watch out for them.

**Even if your youth hasn't yet joined any youth activities thus far, they're always welcome and we'd love to have them for this fun retreat day!**
