August 19, 2021
Hello, Westview families,

There is significant excitement on campus as we prepare to welcome our families for Meet the Teacher tomorrow. We have 32 new families who will be joining our Westview community this year. For the first time since the 2016 school year, our student population includes 140 children. It is awe-inspiring to reflect on the growth that Westview has seen in the past 40 years. The school began as a dream in the kitchen of Jane Stewart's home with just three small children and is now a thriving school community dedicated to helping students learn and grow in a nurturing, positive, and supportive environment that enhances their self-esteem.

Our success begins with our staff, who are dedicated to delivering our mission. They have spent the last two weeks participating in excellent training and collaborating to plan an exceptional educational experience for our students. Dr. Elizabeth Sylvester and Mr. Jeffrey Swan provided a refresher on the Nurtured Heart Approach. Since 2013, Nurtured Heart has guided our staff in shaping interactions with students and supporting them in ways that make them feel valuable, competent, motivated, and empowered. This week, Michael McKee trained all instructional staff and therapists in the Crisis Prevention Institute to ensure that we consistently respond appropriately in a crisis situation.

When our teachers and assistants weren't learning together, they have been hard at work to prepare their classrooms to welcome students back to school. Our staff is excited for the new year and for the opportunity to learn and grow alongside your children. There are so many good things going on at The Westview School, and we cannot wait to share it all with you in the coming months.

Stay well,

  • Have you tested positive for COVID-19 in the last 14 days?
  • Have you recently tested for Covid-19 and are awaiting results?
  • Do you have a headache, fever, sore throat, shortness of breath, or an unusual cough?

  • Have you had any contact with someone who tested positive for COVID-19 in the last 14 days?
  • Have you traveled by air, bus, or cruise ship in the last 14 days?

Our conferences will be limited to student and parent(s) only. No siblings allowed, please. Masks are required for all attendees of an in-person conference.
All families should have received an email from their child’s teacher with instructions for accessing our FACTS Learning Management System (LMS). This letter contains your child’s unique login credentials for the LMS. FACTS LMS is a private and secure student area that will allow students to connect with other students and teachers online, including accessing class materials, uploading assignments, participating in classroom discussions, and taking quizzes.

FACTS has created a short LMS Overview Video to give families and students an introduction to the system. Click here to watch it at your convenience. The password to access the video is factslms (case sensitive).

You will need to use the FACTS LMS login to access the Health Screening Form through the Family Portal each Sunday before the school week.
For ease of access, you can find our previously posted Back to School information, plus COVID-19 school protocols here.

Westview Welcomes Some New and Familiar Faces to Campus
We are delighted to welcome our new music and drama teacher, Geordie Alexander. Geordie, called Mr. A by our students, is from Rochester, New York. His music education is from SUNY Fredonia and Rice University. Mr. A is motivated by relationships and coffee and approaches life with a high level of curiosity. Westview is so excited to welcome Mr. A and his positive energy to campus, and we can't wait for him to meet our students and help them shine!
We are so excited to welcome back to campus, former parent Joni Garcia. Ms. Garcia is joining our Lower Elementary teaching team. A graduate of the University of Houston – Downton, Ms. Garcia has several years of special needs teaching experience in public school and firsthand knowledge raising three boys on the autism spectrum. She has a natural talent for finding the good in all things, and we cannot wait to have her positivity and energy brighten up our school and influence our students.
Local to the Houston area (Spring) and a graduate of Sam Houston State, Jackie Hampton joins Westview as the newest addition to our Kindergarten team. Ms. Jackie prides herself on her caring personality, and her teaching style focuses on building relationships with her students. She loves her family and her dog, and we know that she will love our Westview students. Welcome to Westview, Ms. Jackie! We are so happy you are here!
Westview is excited to welcome Chanmatty Harilall to our Lower Elementary team. Chanmatty, Ms. Shenny to her students, dreamed of being a teacher as a child. She was born in Guyana and lived in New York until 2019, when she moved to Texas. One strength she brings to her teaching style is showing kindness and empathy towards others and in situations. What a joy to have you join our Westview family, Ms. Shenny! We can't wait for you to meet our students!
A familiar face is joining us this year. Katie Hazeldine, a long-time parent and volunteer, will take on the role of our 1900 building Science and Technology teacher. As a child, Ms. Katie dreamed of being an archaeologist like Indiana Jones, but as an adult, she is motivated by working with other talented people. Ms. Katie exudes calmness under pressure, and we cannot be more excited for her to teach and guide our younger Wildcats.
Kashif Khan joins our Middle School staff as a teacher assistant for the 2021-2022 school year. Mr. Kash is a native of Houston and attended the University of Houston, Clear Lake. His laid-back attitude and love of basketball and SpongeBob make him an excellent fit for supporting our Middle School students in the 1900 building. We are so excited to have Kash join our team.
Westview is so excited to have Devin Prikryl-Martin join our Middle School team as an ELA assistant. Childhood dreams of being a novelist paired with an abundance of creativity and life goal of making the world a kinder place makes Ms. Martin an excellent match for The Westview School. We think Devin is a great addition to our team, and we are so happy she is here.
Brenna Smith joins our Middle School team as a math assistant. During the 2020 school year, Ms. Smith worked consistently at Westview as a substitute teacher, and we are so excited to welcome her full-time to campus. She is a recent graduate of the University of Houston, and the ability to create positive change is a big motivator for her. She has a talent for practicing mindfulness and an innate ability to see the good in people and various situations, we think she will be a great asset to our team!
Upper Elementary is gaining a new teacher assistant this year, McKenna Stran. Ms. Stran was born and raised in Friendswood, Texas, and attended the University of Houston. “Be kind to your mind” is a favorite inspirational quote of hers, and she constantly strives to be a better version of herself. Welcome to Westview, McKenna, we love your positivity and joy, and we are so excited for you to join our Westview team.
