The Wedding
as observed by a delighted guest -- Lynn Thomas, SG staff

Over the weekend, a very exciting life event occurred -- Ben Miller and Megan Tatum became "The Millers"!

Surrounded by several hundred family members and friends, Megan made a grand entrance down the aisle of St. Giles Church to her happily awaiting groom.

Pastor Keith gave an eloquent account of two marriages in the Bible -- "a marriage which led to love, and a love which led to marriage."

The service was warm and elegant, accompanied by an ensemble of musicians, with Linus Ellis on the pipe organ, adding pomp and circumstance to the celebration in the processional, the congregational hymns, and the magnificent recessional.

The reception was held in Patterson, where the food was excellent, and the events preceding the couple's send-off were well planned and smoothly executed (as a former caterer and event planner, I can speak to that). There were personal and endearing hands-on touches, like the couple personally designing and hand-tooling their wedding programs, having guests type notes on his-and-hers typewriters from Ben's vintage collection, and watching through tears as Daddy and Daughter cried and whispered through their dance.  It was an affair to remember.

Please be sure to say "hello" to Mr. and Mrs. Miller.

Extra! Extra! Read all About It!

We have new database software in the Church Office, called Realm. This is exciting for us and hopefully for you. We need you to help us help you. In order for you to access the new software for use of the Church Directory and giving (if you choose to give online) we need to have an accurate email address for you in the database. You can provide this by filling in the Connection Card on Sunday, which I am sure you already do in order to record your attendance. Located on the bottom of the Connection Cards given out every Sunday is a place for your name, address, phone and email information. Please fill this in no matter how many years you have been here. There will be a class offered on Wednesday, October 24immediately following Wednesday night dinner. This class will provide guidance on how to use the new software plus some new ways of giving effective January, 1, 2019.

Sunday Morning Technology Team Needs Volunteers

The Sunday morning technology team is looking for help! We need volunteer projectionists to work at both Sunday services. You don't have to be a tech whiz, and much of the prep work can be done from your home.  If you are interested in enhancing our worship this way, contact John Wilson, jwilson@upsem.edu or 804-564-4489.

St. Giles Library and Children's Garden Preschool
Book Sale October 14
The St. Giles Library Ministry and the Board of the Children's Garden Preschool have joined together to refurbish the children's library collection. They want to replace some well-loved books and add new ones, and they want to give the St. Giles congregation an opportunity to purchase a book or two to honor a special child.

On October 14 members of the Board will have the new books before and after each service so you can pick your book(s). The average price of a book is $20, and we will place a bookplate in your chosen book before placing it in the library for children to enjoy.

If you have any questions, please contact Lynne Chambers at 804-396-3053 or debmon7@gmail.com

Bridge Builders: How Christians Can Bridge Divisions in RVA
Wednesday Evenings Through October 17 :: 6:30-7:30 PM
(Common Grounds)

"Oh dear, better not bring that up." What might "that" be? These days "that" which we want to avoid is any talk of politics or the racial and ethnic tensions which come with it.

But if we can't talk about what divides us, how will we be united as believers, or useful in our community as it deals with divisive topics? We won't. And that's why we're having "Bridge Builders," a six week course on Wednesday nights, starting September 12. What better season to deal with divisions, and to learn from the Lord how we might be used to build bridges?

Jo White and Keith Hill will lead the study using the Race, Class, and the Kingdom of God video series produced by Richmond's own David Bailey and Arrabon. Our goal is not to resolve all such controversies. We'll leave with plenty of questions. But we'll also gain a facility for talking about divisive topics in ways that help us be the kinds of bridge builders Richmond needs.

Here's how the class will work: we'll meet in Common Grounds from 6:30 to 7:30, from September 12 to October 17. If you can, come for dinner beforehand at 5:45, or just come for the class at 6:30.

Let's learn together and be used by God in this important season in Richmond. And bring a friend!

HEY KIDS!!   Love Drama?  Love Music?
JOI N US WEDNESDAY NIGHTS this fall in the KIDS' CLUBHOUSE!!

Women's Fellowship - Fall Study
Tuesday Mornings - 9:30 AM

Join the women of St. Giles in Common Grounds in a study of the book, Seeking Allah, Finding Jesus , as Nabeel Nureshi describes his dramatic journey from Islam to Christianity, complete with friendships, investigations, and supernatural dreams along the way...

Bring a friend and join the discussion.

SUNDAY MORNINGS:  September - November

9:30 AM - At the 9:30 AM Discipleship hour we will be looking at a video and reading a book by John Ortberg entitled, "Soul Keeping". Your soul is not just a temporary state. It is not the focus of your quiet time or just your spiritual journey. In this video series and book, John Ortberg reminds us that we have a soul and from it everything else emanates. It is our "real life". In this book John Ortberg becomes what he is at his best -- a spiritual guide. Come experience how to "keep" or "tend" your soul.

11 AM - The team will present a video series by Chip Ingram, entitled "True Spirituality - Becoming a Romans 12 Christian," during the 11 AM hour.

WEDNESDAY EVENINGS:  September- mid-November

  • September through mid-October, Keith Hill and Jo White will teach a class called Bridge Builders, on how Christians can bridge divisions in Richmond. They will use a David Bailey video curriculum. In the last three weeks of the term, Keith will teach on evangelism, using the book "I Once Was Lost."
  • October 24 - An opportunity for the congregation to learn how to access our new software, as well as new ways of giving (e-giving, text-giving, online).
  • October 31 - Trunk or Treat
  • November 7 - Legacy Giving
  • November 14 - How Will the New Tax Laws Affect My 2018 Tax Return

Common Grounds Gallary

Currently on exhibition paintings by the Thursday Painters, a group of ladies who have painted together at St. Giles for many years. Vera Prior was very active with this group and three of her paintings are on display. Most of the group learned the techniques of decorative painting in the early 90s from a local artist and teacher, Jean Galloway, and have continued to perfect their techniques and branch out in other media, including watercolor and oils. These paintings will be on display through October.
