As we reflect on the diverse and profound influence of Indigenous cultures on our society, this month's newsletter celebrates the extraordinary contributions and resilience of Indigenous Peoples. Our articles delve into stories that highlight the significant impact and enduring legacy of Indigenous leaders, languages, and traditions.

Dear, Tim,

In honor of Memorial Day, we begin by paying tribute to the Code Talkers, whose mastery of Indigenous languages was pivotal in the outcomes of the two World Wars. These brave individuals used their native tongues to develop unbreakable codes that were crucial to military success. Their legacy serves as a reminder of the invaluable contributions of Native American populations to the military and the nation's history, highlighting that Native Americans serve in the U.S. military at the highest rates per capita of any group.

We then profile Buffalo Hump, a revered Comanche leader whose unwavering commitment to his people's sovereignty and cultural identity continues to inspire. His leadership during challenging times in Texas, New Mexico, and Oklahoma exemplifies the enduring spirit of the Comanche People.

Next, we explore the innovative project of dubbing "Star Wars: A New Hope" into Diné (Navajo). This remarkable achievement not only preserves the Navajo language but also bridges cultural gaps, bringing a beloved film to Navajo-speaking audiences and highlighting the power of representation.

We also celebrate the rich heritage of lacrosse, a sport with deep Indigenous roots that will return to the Olympic stage in 2028. Originating as a sacred game among tribes such as the Haudenosaunee, lacrosse embodies tradition, spirituality, and community. Its inclusion in the Olympics is a momentous step toward recognizing and honoring its cultural significance.

Our focus on the mental health benefits of language revitalization underscores the critical role that cultural identity and heritage play in community well-being. As demonstrated by the Barngarla language revitalization in South Australia, reconnecting with one's native language fosters a sense of pride, unity, and emotional healing.

At Languages 4, we believe that embracing and revitalizing Indigenous languages and cultures is fundamental to building healthy, resilient communities. By integrating land-based education, inclusive history, and cultural practices, we support the holistic well-being of Indigenous Peoples.

Thank you for joining us on this journey to celebrate and preserve the rich heritage of Indigenous cultures. Together, we can ensure that these vital stories and languages continue to thrive for generations to come.

With respect and gratitude,

Founder's Corner | A Message from Tim O'Hagan

Welcome, Leaders and Language Advocates,

It is hard to believe that May has come and gone. I am honored to bring you another edition of What Are Languages 4? This month, our focus is on the extraordinary contributions and enduring legacy of Indigenous Peoples, particularly highlighting their profound influence on our society and culture.

First, I want to personally pay special tribute to the Native American Code Talkers. Their remarkable service in the military, using their native languages to create unbreakable codes during the world wars, is an incredible testament to their valor and ingenuity. Native Americans serve in the U.S. military at the highest rates per capita, a fact that speaks volumes about their enduring spirit and dedication. We honor their legacy this Memorial Day and acknowledge the pivotal role they played in our nation's history.

I am also thrilled to share an article close to my heart about the Navajo-language dub of "Star Wars: A New Hope." As someone who grew up deeply inspired by Star Wars, seeing it translated into Diné is nothing short of magical. It beautifully bridges cultural gaps and celebrates Navajo language and heritage. Even more exciting, there is a current project to dub Star Wars into Ojibwe, further highlighting the importance of representation and cultural pride in popular media.

Our profile of Buffalo Hump, the influential Comanche leader, marks the beginning of our series on significant Indigenous figures. Despite the harsh treatment and historical injustices faced by Native American communities, their influence on the foundation of the United States is substantial yet often overlooked. Buffalo Hump's story is a testament to the resilience and strength of Indigenous leadership, and we are committed to bringing more such stories to light.

Identity and culture are fundamental to self-esteem and self-confidence. Ignoring or undermining these elements has devastating consequences on mental health. At Languages 4, our mission is to support language reclamation and revitalization through community-driven projects that respect and honor Indigenous cultures. We believe that fostering a strong cultural identity is key to building healthy, resilient communities.

Thank you for your continued support and engagement in this vital cause. Together, we can ensure that these critical stories and languages continue to thrive for generations to come.
