Why Black Disabled History Matters

Nearly six million African Americans live with some kind of disability, the highest rate of all population segments, according to the National Center on Disability and Journalism.

The Arc U.S. recently shared a blog post originally published on the World Institute on Disability’s website: Why Black Disabled History Matters by Dikko Yusuf:

Black disabled history is an aspect of Black history, which informs world history. Black History Month is officially celebrated every year in the U.S., Canada, Ireland, and the UK. During this month, we celebrate the achievements of Black leaders throughout history and while many of these leaders also had a disability, that aspect is often minimized or overlooked. Black disabled people are multiply-marginalized, and more prominent awareness of the accomplishments of Black leaders, who are often also disabled, can help drive and inform systems change for the current and future generations of disabled people around the world.

March is Developmental Disability Awareness Month

Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month starts in just two days! The month will be full of events commemorating and celebrating what the community has achieved and where we are going. Below are some details about what's planned. Join in and help continue building a future where the rights of people with disabilities are upheld and respected!:

Disability Rights Advocacy Day - March 7

Individuals with disabilities have the knowledge, experience, and ideas to inform much-needed policy changes, and the drive to do whatever it takes to make those changes happen. Disability Rights Advocacy Day aims to provide the visibility people with disabilities are often not given and strengthen the advocacy happening around the state to include policy changes at all government levels.

When: March 7 from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Where: The Colorado State Capitol - 200 E Colfax Ave., Denver

Intellectual & Developmental Disability Awareness Day - March 20

When: March 20 from 7:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Where: The Colorado State Capitol - 200 E Colfax Ave., Denver
Both in-person and virtual options to attend are available

Collaborating with and creating awareness for legislators about the needs of Colorado residents who have intellectual developmental disabilities is among the purposes of IDD Awareness Day at the Colorado Capitol.

Featured speakers will include IDD advocates and people who support our community.

Comedy Night With Josh Blue Is Next Week

Get your tickets today!

Critics have said Josh Blue is not a cerebral palsy comic; he’s a comic who happens to have cerebral palsy. Josh does more than 200 comedy shows a year. His stand-up routine is in a constant state of evolution and his off-the-cuff improvisational skills guarantee that no two shows are alike.

Following Josh's set, you’ll experience a candid conversation with him and our Executive Director Lori Ropa about what inspires Josh to share his humor with comedy fans worldwide.

Josh's stories spread laughter and break down stereotypes. He encourages moving beyond preconceived notions and engaging with people with disabilities as individuals. Audience members will be given the opportunity to ask Josh questions.

Children's Books Honored For Disability Representation

Several new children’s books have been honored for featuring storylines focused on the experiences of people with disabilities.

The American Library Association named three winners and six honorees of its Schneider Family Book Awards this month, according to Disability Scoop. The annual awards recognize an “author or illustrator for the artistic expression of the disability experience for child and adolescent audiences” and are handed out in three categories targeting various age groups — kids up to age 8, those ages 9 to 12 and teens.

Our partner Vehicles for Charity can take your clunker and turn it into cash at auction. To ensure your donation benefits our chapter, simply designate The Arc - Jefferson, Clear Creek & Gilpin Counties as the recipient, and the proceeds will come directly to us.
