It is with great sorrow that I share with you that our Welcome Home has been badly vandalized, twice, in recent weeks. The house is a 120-year-old mansion with a sweeping staircase, bay windows, beautiful stained glass, and a wide front porch. The features of this grand old lady drew us in as we searched for a Northside home to house low-income families with disabilities, and singles who had a hard time with soaring rents. The police met us at the house where the windows had been smashed, doors and walls ripped down, stairs gouged, and syringes left behind. Was this just a wild drug party gone bad, or a message about our work as a resettlement agency? We just don’t know, and probably never will.

Just like the smashing up of the house, so has the US Refugee Assistance Program been smashed up. But InterFaith Works is holding firm in its resolve to go forward with the restoration and renovation of the Welcome Home, as the need for it is just as great as ever. And the need for us to be here to help the thousands of New Americans that we resettled over the last three years is also just a great as ever. We just received the first permit from the city and know that when the house is ready, the tenants will anchor this home in the Northside neighborhood, bringing back vibrancy and stability.

These acts of violence and destruction do not define us, and do not deter us. What defines us are the beliefs and values that led to our founding. We recently took time to clarify and write these down for posterity and for our future. You can read more about what drives us to stay-the-course and continue our service to this community at the following link: InterFaith Works Defined

Our fifty-five staff members, dozens of volunteers and interns, and the hundreds of people who use our services every week want you to know that “we are soooo open” and will be for the next 50 years and beyond.

Quoc “Q” Phan, has been on staff for two years, serving the health and wellness needs of refugees. His talent as an artist now graces our entrance door, reminding people that we are here for them.

PS: The Welcome Home features an historic and grand staircase, at the top of which is an enormous and equally grand stained glass window. Neither of these were destroyed, and I think perhaps it is because over the entrance to both is a hand carved arch that reads, “God Bless Our Home.” Amen!
