EDMONIA “WILDFIRE” LEWIS

The first professional African American and Native American sculptor, Edmonia Lewis earned critical praise for work that explored religious and classical themes. Little known but highly accomplished, her story is central to the narrative of the Black Artist’s struggle to gain a professional foothold in 19th Century America.

In this season of thanksgiving, we are grateful for artists like Edmonia for blazing a path for others.
