Heffner Plumbing Greetings!
We see the yellow stickers on appliances all of the time, but do you really pay attention to them? I typically don't, especially when I always see these on water heaters. The yellow stickers are called Energy Guides and are mandated by the Department of Energy to show energy use and efficiency of a product. I recently had a customer question me about the Energy Guide for a Navien tankless water heater as compared to a conventional tank type water heater. I couldn't answer the question, so I had to do some research and came up with some interesting information. I have pictured the Energy Guides for a Navien tankless water heater along with a 50 gallon natural gas water heater and a 50 gallon electric water heater below. The Navien wins hands down, with the 50 gallon gas second and the 50 gallon electric costing the most to operate on an annual basis. Tankless water heaters only heat water when needed, so the energy costs are extremely low as compared to a gas or electric tank type water heater. With the on demand heating, tankless water heaters will actually pay for themselves over time. A tank type water heater will NEVER do that. Something to consider when your water heater needs to be replaced.
I'm be the first to admit that I am not an accountant with an understanding of the Federal Tax Code, but I just recently found out that there is a Federal Tax Credit for $300.00 for tankless water heaters. According to what I have read, this is due to expire on December 31, 2016. Will this be renewed in 2017? I have no clue! Another fact to consider when replacing your water heater however.
