What Does Your Name Represent? ( 1 of 5 )

While there are individuals who are concerned about what their name means, there are others who are concerned about the tone in which it is called.

This was especially true of our parents’ tone of voice when as children they called our names.

We knew the difference between our parents’ warm and loving tone, versus the tone which produced terror in our hearts.

This characteristic is equally applied to Jesus.

He has a tone of warmth and love, but He also has a tone of reprimand. (Matthew 21:12-13).

As it was wise and beneficial for us to recognize our parents’ tone, so also is the case when Jesus calls our name.

We need to decipher what is implied when He calls our name to either bless or reprimand us.

As with our parents’ Jesus even more so delights in communicating love, compassion, mercy, and approval when He calls our name.

Furthermore, He calls us in a tone that assures us of His willingness to assist us to become all we were created to be.

No one can call our name as Jesus can and there is a greater need for us to take note and respond when Jesus calls.

Therefore, a person’s name, whether they like it or not, holds the key to their entire identity.

Our name represents failures, successes, good and bad, past, and present.

Even if we change our name, it still does not change our DNA or the identity of our particular name.

Jesus is aware of everything our individual person represents.

There is a very tender, compassionate, and loving moment that Mary experienced with Jesus when He called her name as stated in John 20:16a, “Mary!” Jesus said.

Jesus knew of Mary’s past and that He had delivered and freed her from the possession of seven demons. (Luke 8:2 and Mark 16:9),

What Does Your Name Represent?   (2 of 5)

Jesus knew what others thought of her and how some chose to judge her based on her past evil reputation and actions, as one being controlled by evil spirits.

Jesus knew what Mary thought of herself, how she evaluated her strengths and weaknesses.

What she was ashamed of in her past, as well as her celebration of the new woman that she had become through His deliverance of her.

Jesus knew how she had devoted her life, love, and faithfulness to Him after being delivered.

Jesus knew of her willingness and joy to financially aid Him in Galilee.

Jesus knew of her courage to publicly identify with Him, her Christ, who had been beaten, scorned, mocked, crowned with thorns, nailed to the cross, died, and hated by so many people.

Jesus knew how she risked her life because her love for Him outweighed her fear of them.

Jesus knew of the sacrifice she made in rising very early on the first morning of opportunity that she was allowed to come to His tomb to properly anoint His “crucified” body.

Jesus took note of her heartbreak and tears that she expressed because of her love and concern when she did not see the body of her crucified Lord in the tomb which she had witnessed Him being laid in.

Jesus knew that in Mary finding the tomb empty, how she would run and alert the disciples.

Also, how she would return to the tomb with Peter and John.

What Does Your Name Represent? (3 of 5 )

Jesus knew that Mary would linger at the tomb even after Peter and John left her.

Jesus also knew how Mary would be obedient when He according to John 20:17, instructed her to go and deliver a message to the Apostles.

From Mary’s identity, Jesus knew all of Mary’s past, present, and what she would do in her future.

Since Jesus knows alllllllll about us, we should be concerned about what our personal name represents.

A serious rhetorical question is: When are we going to believe the FACT and BE CONCERNED that Jesus knows EVERYTHING ABOUT US, OUR THOUGHTS, AND the ACTIONS that we do?

He does not confuse our name with other people who have the SAME name as we do.

Thus, we should be concerned about the tone of how He calls our name which is warranted by our actions.

Even though His tone may be harsh in our opinion, it is just and righteous, despite our attempt to minimize the severity of our disobedient actions.

Thanks be to the Good Lord that through His love and mercy, He is more than willing to assist us in being obedient to His transforming Word.

By so being, that will change our shameful past into a present one of honor and respect.

Ecclesiastes 7:1a- A good name is better than expensive perfume…

Proverbs 22:1- A good name [earned by honorable behavior, godly wisdom, moral courage, and personal integrity] is more desirable than great riches…

Choose a good reputation over great riches…

There is such great honor for the witness of God’s great love and transforming power when we allow Jesus to CONTINUALLY change our character.

What Does Your Name Represent? (4 of 5)

We should constantly be growing and developing by constantly being obedient to every Word of our Lord.

Proverbs 3:1- My child, remember my teachings and instructions and obey them completely.

2- They will help you live a long and prosperous life. (…bring you peace and prosperity, abundant peace, your life will be satisfying, a full life, and well-being.)

In our hearts and on our lips, a constant spirit of praise and thanksgiving should reside stemming from the unbelievable change that we constantly experience as we walk with Jesus.

So if you are walking in obedience to the Lord’s Holy Word, don’t fret over the past of what your name represented.

But rather celebrate what your new identity represents both now and even after you pass on.

Proverbs 10:7- The memory of the righteous [person] is a [source of] blessing, But the name of the wicked will [be forgotten and] rot [like a corpse].

Good people (godly, righteous, and just people) will be remembered as a blessing, but the wicked will soon be forgotten.

Psalm 34:16- The face of the LORD is against them that do evil, to cut off the remembrance of them from the earth. So that when they die, they are soon forgotten.

What Does Your Name Represent? (5 of 5)

Therefore, live so that when your name is called by the Lord or others, it rings with respect and honor.

Also, so that positive thoughts of love and faithfulness actions are associated with it.

Most of all, live EACH DAY so that your name represents a deep committed love and obedience to the Lord Jesus Christ.

Therefore, we must ponder and consider two very important rhetorical questions: What Does Your Name Represent now and What will your name develop into representing?

Then, move from pondering to action!

Make it happen!

YOU WILL BE SO DELIGHTED BY THE EXPERIENCE OF PLEASING OUR GREAT HEAVENLY FATHER!

God bless you and yours in Jesus’ name.

The inheritance of a distinguished and noble name is a proud inheritance to him who lives worthily of it. Charles Caleb Colton

The invisible thing called a Good Name is made up of the breath of numbers that speak well of you.   Lord Halifax

Whatever you lend let it be your money, and not your name. Money you may get again, and, if not, you may contrive to do without it; name once lost you cannot get again, and, if you cannot contrive to do without it, you had better never have been born. Edward Bulwer-Lytton

A good name, like good will, is got by many actions and lost by one. Lord Jeffrey

A man’s name is not like a mantle which merely hangs about him, and which one perchance may safely twitch and pull, but a perfectly fitting garment, which, like the skin, has grown over him, at which one cannot rake and scrape without injuring the man himself. Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe
