What Friends Do

Maybe you are one of the extraordinary people who know exactly what to do and say when someone’s world has been shaken by tragedy. I am grateful for you! For the other 99% of us, reaching out when a friend is hurting can feel awkward and uncomfortable. If you’re like me, you probably fear you’ll say or do the wrong thing.

During my family’s deepest times of loss, a couple of things made a giant impact.

1. Show up. My dear friend, Leslie, has a unique ability to show up at the exact moment you need to feel the love. Rather than saying “call if you need anything”, she’ll let you know your dinner is in the oven and ask if you’d prefer to enjoy the deliciousness tonight or tomorrow night.

I love how she doesn’t casually drop the ball in your court during a traumatic time when you really don’t know what you need. She shows up! Leslie brings something yummy, hugs you around the neck, and lets you know you’re not conquering this giant alone.

2. Reach out. The Lord has a phenomenal way of giving us a holy nudge when we need it. Act on it! Reaching out doesn’t have to be extravagant — a text, call, or card to let a friend know they haven’t been forgotten will always arrive at the perfect time.

2 Corinthians 1:3-4 says, “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God.”

Ask the Lord who could use a little encouragement right now. If someone comes to mind, consider giving them a call or sending a handwritten note. You’ve probably seen how these treasures always seem to come at the exact right moment!

In my years of ministry, I've run across certain "rumors" people spread about the Bible. There are certain teachings people often claim are in the Scriptures ... but just aren't there. In this series, we dive into these gossip narratives and separate fact from fiction.

Truth is, the church is more than just walls, a building, pews and pulpit. The Bible teaches us that each of us make up the church. That we are to serve and love one another. That we should be a unified front for love, grace, forgiveness, and selflessness.

Join us as we discuss how we can become the church the Bible calls us to be.

Hurricane Ida Update: Wait, Pray, Give, and Prepare.

We watched and prayed as the powerful Hurricane Ida made landfall Sunday. Our best response today is to pray, wait, actively communicate, and prepare. In collaboration with long-standing partners, UMCOR is providing humanitarian relief and is prepared to assist with refugee resettlement.

It is one of the poorest countries in the world, with high infant and maternal mortality rates, and millions of Afghans have been displaced as refugees over these many years. Read more.

Parent and Student GroupMe

We have a student and a parent GroupMe account to help keep everyone up to date on what's going on in student ministry. GroupMe is a group texting app that's a great forum for staying connected and asking questions. It can be muted, so you won't get notifications constantly. If you or your student would like to be added, just text or email Nathan at 706-464-7548 and nathan@theridgecolumbus.com.

September Theme - Generosity

This September at RidgeRunners our theme is Generosity based on 1st Timothy 6:18: "Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share."

Masks are encouraged, but not required, on Sunday morning. If you wish to send your child with a mask, we will support that and require them to wear it while at RidgeRunners. Extra kn-95 masks are available in the greeting area near kid's check-in.

Hi, Parents!
This fall we're offering both in-person and online RidgeRunners experiences.

In-person
Infants through Toddlers are returning to the classroom upstairs off the Turner Auditorium main hallway and Pre-K through Elementary will continue to meet in the gym. Both groups meet for the full 10:30 a.m. service. Check in at the hallway table just inside the Turner Auditorium doors.

Online
RidgeRunners will post a video on YouTube. You can also watch at any time throughout the week after the livestream.

If you're looking for some more online options for children's programming check out:

*Rightnowmedia.org: This is a free video resource for our church. Check out the kids' section (VeggieTales, etc.) and watch with the family! Registration link: click here.

*Ridge resources for Sunday morning activities/lessons. Just in case you missed out this weekend: click here.

Car Talk:

*What did God do you need to have to be able to give? (Any amount is enough. Give from you have.)
*What is something you can give?
*Who is someone you know who needs help? And how can you help them?
*Where is one place you can look for people to help?
*What is the difference between a cheerful give and a not so cheerful giver?

Memory Verse (learn it together):
"Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share."
1 Timothy 6:18

Safety Update

We are all alarmed by the rise in COVID-19 (delta variant) cases across the nation. The Ridge Church is currently monitoring the situation for the Columbus area through the Mayor's office as well as the Episcopal Office of the South Georgia Conference.

Our current policy is that we are not mandating masks for our Sunday morning services. However, we are encouraging masks for those who are unvaccinated. We will have KN95 masks available on Sunday mornings.

If you don't feel safe or comfortable with in-person worship, we understand and encourage you to continue worshiping with us online.

And as always, if you have any questions or concerns, feel free to email us at info@theridgecolumbus.com.

Please continue to pray for God's healing from this terrible virus.

Blessings,
Rev. Jimmy McIlrath
