"What Hiking Taught Me About Getting Ready"

Hello everyone:

I went to Alaska a few weeks ago. Wow, that is not something I have been able to say before!

My middle son is working in Alaska this summer, entertaining the cruise ship passengers who come ashore for excursions in Skagway. We went to visit him and it was truly an adventure!

Before you ask -

  • No, we were not on a cruise, though we got to Skagway via Ferry.
  • No, I did not see whales. We did see three bald eagles and a black bear. Not a brown bear, mind you, or I wouldn't be writing this as we would have been eaten.
  • No, we did not see the Northern Lights. We were in AK for the Summer Solstice and 22 hours of daylight. It needs to be dark to see the Northern Lights. Apparently, they're more a cold weather occurrence.
  • We did not hike Denali. Denali is a solid 15 hours away from where we were, as was most of the rest of Alaska. For reference, the State of Illinois fits 11 times in the State of Alaska.
  • We used all the modes of transportation! Planes, trains and automobiles, plus Ferry Boats (and feet - see below about hiking)!
  • I ate A LOT of seafood. Halibut chowder, clam chowder, fried halibut, grilled salmon, scallops, crab cakes... soooo good...
  • We had beautiful weather, mostly sunny every day. FYI, 60 degrees in Alaska feels like 80 degrees in Chicago because of the angle of the sun.
  • We christened our new Passports with a day-trip to Canada. And speed limits in kilometers instead of miles take some getting used to!

And we hiked. A lot. I love to hike! And I always have time to reflect while I hike, one of the many reasons that I love it!

The original title for today's article was "Condition for the Climb: What Hiking Taught Me About Getting Ready for Big Things". This was too long, but it clearly introduced what I talk about! Check out What Hiking Taught Me About Getting Ready Enjoy!

FYI, if you now live, or ever have lived, in Illinois, check out the Illinois Treasurer's ICash website at https://icash.illinoistreasurer.gov/. My windfall was $5.10, but, hey, yours could be more!

Recently, I dropped off bags of dondated professional clothing to Champ’s Career Closet at Saint Xavier University. From the Coordinator,

  • "The Career Closet is a free resource that provides professional clothing to students preparing for interviews, internships, or the start of a new career. Each semester [we] host a free thrifting event to further increase access to these items", and they plan to expand programming even more this upcoming school year.
  • Donations are always welcome and can be dropped off at our office at Saint Xavier University.
  • Reach out via email to careerdevelopment@sxu.edu to arrange a drop-off.
