Good morning,
Lately, I keep seeing the word whimsy popping up all over social media.
Whimsy = play + imagination + curiosity + delight.
It’s one of those words that seems to suddenly be everywhere—and eventually, I had to stop and think: What exactly is whimsy? And why does it seem to be calling my attention?
The more I thought about it, the more I realized that whimsy is really an invitation to bring a little more playfulness, curiosity, imagination, and delight into our everyday lives.
And honestly? I think we could all use a little more of it. I know I could.
As adults, we become really good at being responsible.
We make the lists.
We meet the deadlines.
We take care of everyone.
We plan ahead.
We get things done.
And somewhere along the way, we can lose some of that childlike willingness to do something simply because it feels fun. That’s where whimsy comes in.
It might be wearing the ridiculous earrings because they make you smile.
Taking the long way home because you wonder what's down that road.
Dancing in the kitchen while dinner cooks.
Buying the colorful journal you absolutely do not need.
Stopping for ice cream.
Picking wildflowers.
Blowing bubbles.
Singing loudly in the car.
Saying, “Why not?” instead of automatically saying, “That doesn’t make sense.”
Whimsy doesn't have to be extravagant. In fact, I think it's often found in the tiniest moments. And perhaps that's why this word has been sticking with me. Because whimsy feels like another way of saying: You don't always have to have a reason.
You are allowed to follow a little spark of delight.
You are allowed to be curious.
You are allowed to be a little ridiculous.
You are allowed to play.
And especially in this season of life, when so much can feel like responsibility and routine, whimsy gives us permission to loosen our grip a little. To step out of autopilot. To remember that we aren't here simply to get everything done.
We're here to experience our lives.
So here's your invitation…
This week, look for a little whimsy.
What would be fun? What would delight me?
Then follow that little nudge. Maybe it's spontaneous. Maybe it's silly. Maybe it makes absolutely no sense. That's okay. Because perhaps a life filled with more joy doesn't require a dramatic reinvention.
Maybe it begins with something much smaller. A little color. A little curiosity. A little play. A little whimsy.
Where could you invite a little more whimsy into your life?
Go ahead. Be a little impractical. Be a little playful. Be a little ridiculous. You might be surprised by how much life is waiting for you on the other side of “Why not?”
Wishing you a week of whimsical delights, love and laughter,
Lisa
