Dear reader,
September brings the return of the cultural season, but this year it arrives with an especially interesting question: how does the past change when we look at it from where we stand today?
At Versailles, the 250th anniversary of American independence is bringing renewed attention to France's remarkable role in the birth of the United States. Here in Washington, artists are offering more than one answer to what the American experience looks like after 250 years. New York is counting down to Fashion Week. The official NYFW schedule runs September 10–15, with Ralph Lauren and several other presentations on September 9. The official schedule contains about 70 runway shows and presentations. In France, American writers will soon gather in Vincennes to examine their country from across the Atlantic. And in Mexico, two centuries of diplomatic relations with France are becoming the starting point for a new chapter of cultural exchange.
Different places. Different stories. Yet they share something that feels particularly relevant this September: the invitation to look again. At a history we thought we knew. At a country, a culture or a place from a different perspective. That is what I hope the FQM Letter from the Publisher brings you every Thursday: not simply more to read, but something worth seeing differently.
Pour your coffee or tea, and come with us.
