This Sunday's Sermon and Song List
To be "a servant" often carries with it a negative image. Rather than noble, joyful, humility our world might think of more negative ideas. But God doesn't see it that way. In fact, the whole Christian life is one of "service". In fact, the word "ministry" means service! Paul commands us to make our bodies a living sacrifice for this is our "reasonable service." So, God's word actually places a lot of dignity on the idea of service. So, when we come to the subject of "Deacons" from 1 Timothy 3:8-13 we come to see not only a noble role, but we see a role that is meant to embody what we all strive to be for Christ: a happy, holy servant. So much of the world's efforts focus on getting what we want. Realizing our potential. Living our best life. Being in charge. Getting. Getting. Getting. In Christ we are freed from finding our satisfaction in getting. We're freed to be "deacon-like" and find great confidence in our faith through giving. Of course, this makes us think of Jesus: the Great Master who served and gave Himself for others. Pray with me this weekend that the Lord will excite our hearts for the Master who serves and calls us to serve together!

To get yourself ready to sing on Sunday you can start listening to the songs we'll be singing together:
  • Raise A Hallelujah
  • Christ Is Enough
  • Jesus Messiah
  • Come Lord Jesus (Even So Come)
  • How Great Thou Art
We created a playlist on Youtube in case you want to start listening today. You can find that by clicking HERE.

BONUS!
Don't forget that it's Mother's Day this Sunday! What an incredible time in our history to celebrate Mother's Day. At the same time that people are incredibly confused about what it even means to be a woman, the Supreme Court is actually on the verge of overturning Roe v. Wade. Justice Samuel Alito writes in the first draft of the recent court opinion that leaked, "Roe was egregiously wrong from the start. Its reasoning was exceptionally weak, and the decision has had damaging consequences. And far from bringing about a national settlement of the abortion issue, Roe and Casey have enflamed the debate and deepened division. It is time to heed the Constitution and return the issue of abortion to the people's elected representatives."

The timing of these events bring another issue to light on Mother's Day. That is, many women experience much sorrow and regret on Mother's Day. Because of loss, fractured relationships, or childlessness, many women feel a pang of sadness on Mother's Day. So, Mother's Day is also a great occasion to remember the sufficiency of Jesus Christ to comfort the grieving and hurting. It's a great time to remember that Jesus delights to forgive and that he gave His life so that the grace of forgiveness of God can be known and felt by mother's everywhere.

"The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. 'The Lord is my portion' says my soul, 'Therefore, I will hope in Him.'" (Lamentations 3:22-24)
Meet Your Elders

I love getting great suggestions from the body about ways to serve them. One dear sibling in Christ recently asked about some ways to make the elders more well-known and recognized. It was a really great suggestion! So, for the next few weeks we want to take a brief part of the newsletter to "introduce" you to the elders. First up is Taylor O'Bryan:

What is the biggest blessing about being an elder at Discovery?
  • I enjoy getting insights into people's giftings and personalities. We're all created in unique ways and being an elder helps me to see people operating and growing in different ways.
How can the congregation pray for you?
  • I appreciate prayers for my family. Vicky and I said "I do" not quite 14 yrs ago...the oldest of our 5 kids is not quite 12...life has been in constant transition every step of the way. We need lots of wisdom and lots of grace.
What's a fun fact about yourself?
  • I enjoy learning about history, wars, and economics. Usually through biographies, but also through EARLY Sunday morning YouTube videos with a cup of hot coffee.

If you get a chance to see Taylor in person on Sunday, thank him for serving the body and let him know you're praying for him!
Women's Bible Study!
Understand that works don’t save us, rather good works follow true faith as our beliefs and actions line up with each other.

James had a unique earthly relationship with Jesus, but his letter clarifies what the Christian life should look like for us all. The Book of James is filled with practical wisdom for Christians, calling us to live out genuine faith through good works, but it is also rooted in rich theology. Perhaps more than any other book in the New Testament, James emphasizes the application of Christian belief.

This 13-session study examines the core message of James: the relationship between faith and works. In our own ability, we cannot stand in the face of adversity. Without faith we could never find the strength to trust God. We would never be able to see above the trials we meet and to keep our eyes focused on the King while counting our trials as joy. This is the essence of James. We don’t work to be saved; we work because we are saved. Faith apart from works can never be sustained.

This study will be offered on Thursday mornings at 9:00am. Childcare is provided. Books are $15. If you have any questions please contact the church office.
SUMMER ZONE: Launching Wednesday, May 25th @ 6:00PM
We're excited to announce Summer Zone! Summer Zone is for the whole family and all ages are welcome!

Here's the plan for each week:
  • 6:00PM: Gather for a focused time of teaching - our study will be on Temptation and we'll be drawing from various Scriptures as well as C.S. Lewis' Screwtape Letters to be wiser about fighting temptation. Be praying for the pastors as they finish up writing this curriculum!
  • 6:20PM: Break for fellowship over snacks - we'll be encouraging any willing participants to team up and bring a snack to share each week. We'll let the kids get their snacks first because immediately following this quick break they'll go downstairs for a supervised activity.
  • 6:30PM: Adults (and interested High Schoolers) form discussion groups around the teaching for the night. Children will go downstairs for a supervised activity (Week One: A Lego Building Challenge!)
  • 7:00-7:15PM: Wrap up and dismiss. Of course, everyone is welcome to stay at this point, but the formal plans for the night are wrapped up at this point for the sake of our childcare volunteers.

Ways YOU can contribute to the success of Summer Zone are:
  • Team up with a friend one week to bring a snack to share
  • Team up with a parent or other volunteer to provide a fun activity for the kids to do together (Lego challenges, special games, etc.)
  • Come prepared to discuss the teaching each week and say things that encourage others in their Christian walk
  • Linger afterward to help tidy up - we want to leave the building just like we found it!
  • Pray for really fruitful conversations and spiritual encouragement

What do you think is the most repeated command in the Bible?
This week I wanted to share an article with you on a strangely neglected topic. It is strange that it is neglected because it is in fact the most repeated command in the Bible. It isn’t the most repeated command ‘directly’. But by implication it is. When the word says do not be afraid, give thanks, rejoice what is it really getting at?

Here is an excerpt:

“What do you think is the most repeated command in the Bible?

It’s not any of the prohibitions or warnings. It’s not about sex, or money, or power. The most repeated command in the Bible will probably surprise you: Be happy. God tells us more than anything else, in different ways, to “praise the Lord,” “do not be afraid,” “rejoice,” and “give thanks” — all of which are commands, in essence, to be happy.”

Seeking joy in God is of supreme importance. Deuteronomy 28:47-48 says, “Because you did not serve the Lord your God with joyfulness and gladness of heart, because of the abundance of all things, therefore you shall serve your enemies.” Hold on a second, did that just say what it said. Indeed it did. Because you did not serve the Lord with joy and gladness you will serve your enemies.  Hebrews 13:17 says, “Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with groaning, for that would be of no advantage to you.” Take these two verses together and you see the supreme importance of joy. Service to God that is joyless will end up serving your enemies in the end. The joyless service of your leaders will be of no advantage to you. Joy is an essential part of service. But what is this joy we are talking about? It’s joy in the Lord, joy in the Gospel, and joy in the love of others. It’s a holy, godly, selfless joy. May the Lord grant this kind of joy to our church. A joy that isn’t dependent on circumstances. A joy that overcomes fear and petty annoyance. A joy deeper than the world's joy, a joy that transforms the world’s joy into praise to God. A joy that praises God. A joy that serves, encourages, and strengthens the body of Christ. May God fill us with such joy as we pursue it wholeheartedly. Or in other words may we be obedient to God’s word and not rebel against his command to pursue joy in Him.
