What Makes the New Covenant Superior to the Old Covenant
Under the old covenant, people were required to keep God’s laws. However, in the new covenant, we discover a new set of laws that keep us.
1. The old covenant required a person to love God 24/7,[1] whereas the new covenant declares that God loves us 24/7.[2]
2. The old covenant demanded obedience[3] but the new covenant provides faith.[4]
3. The old covenant insisted on repentance to experience God’s goodness,[5]while the new covenant freely reveals God’s goodness that leads to repentance.[6]
4. Under the old covenant, one lived under condemnation[7] but in the new covenant, there is no condemnation.[8]
5. The old covenant could not provide peace,[9] whereas the new covenant is all about knowing and experiencing God’s peace.[10]
6. The old covenant made righteousness something people had to earn;[11]however, in the new covenant, righteousness is a free gift.[12]
7. Under the old covenant, God’s presence was found in the Holy of Holies.[13] In the new covenant, His presence lives in believers and makes them holy.[14]
8. Under the old covenant, sins were covered;[15] however, in the new covenant, our sins have been forgiven and taken away forever.[16]
9. Under the old covenant, a person had to keep the whole law, but in the new covenant, God’s love for us has fulfilled the law.[17]
You can “try” to keep the old covenant laws or you can let the new covenant “keep you.”
