Good afternoon,
The other day I was driving with the windows down, flipping through radio stations.
Country.
Classic rock.
The 70s.
Pop.
Hip-hop.
A podcast.
The news.
With one click of a button, the entire experience of my drive changed. Prince came on and my energy skyrocketed as I sang along to Party Like It’s 1999.
The scenery stayed exactly the same. The road didn't change. The traffic didn't disappear. The weather remained exactly as it was.
Only the station changed.
The perfect reminder that our minds work the same way. Every day we have dozens of "stations" available to us.
There's The Worry Station, broadcasting an endless stream of "What if...?"
There's The Comparison Station, reminding us how everyone else seems to have it all figured out.
There's The Critic Station, quick to point out every mistake and every place we fall short.
And then there are other stations.
The Gratitude Station, noticing what is going right.
The Wonder Station, paying attention to sunsets, laughter, blooming flowers, and the kindness of strangers.
The Possibility Station, asking, "What might be possible?"
The Joy Station, inviting us to dance in the kitchen, call a friend, or stop for ice cream on a Tuesday.
None of these stations erase life's challenges. Choosing Gratitude doesn't mean pretending hard things don't exist. Choosing Wonder doesn't ignore grief. Choosing Joy doesn't deny pain. It simply means deciding what deserves the loudest volume.
Our brains naturally notice problems. It's how we're wired. But with intention, we can gently retune our attention. Not because life is perfect. But because life is always offering more than one story.
The beautiful thing is that you don't have to stay tuned to the station you woke up listening to. At any moment, you can notice what you're paying attention to and ask yourself: Is this the station I want playing in the background of my life today?
Maybe today you turn down the volume on fear. Maybe you turn up curiosity. Maybe you tune into hope. Maybe you choose to notice the little glimmers that have been there all along.
What "station" have you been listening to most lately?
How does it make you feel?
If you could change the dial today, what would you tune into instead?
What is one small way you can strengthen that new station this week?
This week, notice when your mind begins playing a familiar soundtrack. Then imagine reaching over to the dashboard and gently turning the dial. You always have more than one station available. The choice of what gets your attention may just change the entire journey.
Wishing you a week of good tunes and good thoughts,
Lisa
