Friends,

As we head into the general election, I want to take a moment to clearly explain what sets me apart in this race and why it matters for the future of Michigan.

This Sunday, April 19, Democrats will endorse either Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald or Washtenaw County Prosecutor Eli Savit. While they come from different backgrounds, they share a similar approach to the role of Attorney General.

Both first became prosecutors after being elected in 2020. Both have aligned themselves with the agenda of the current Attorney General, an approach that has too often prioritized politics over public safety and used taxpayer dollars on politically driven cases. And both have demonstrated a willingness to act as political advocates rather than impartial prosecutors.

My path has been very different.

I began my career as an Assistant Prosecutor in 1996 and was elected Eaton County Prosecutor in 2013. I did not enter this profession through politics. I worked my way up, case by case, earning the trust of my colleagues and the people I serve. My focus has always been on applying the law fairly and doing the job the right way.

Eli Savit has built a reputation as a far-left activist. Early in his tenure, he issued policies declining to prosecute certain offenses, including prostitution, minor drug crimes, and some felony gun cases. Prior to taking office, he served as Senior Legal Counsel to the Mayor of Detroit. His record reflects a philosophy of selectively enforcing the law.

Karen McDonald has built her career with a clear focus on political advancement. While she has experience as a prosecutor, private practice attorney, and circuit court judge, her path has consistently aligned with positioning herself for higher office rather than a sustained commitment to impartial prosecution.

Her tenure as prosecutor has included controversial and highly debated decisions, most notably in the Oxford High School shooting case involving charges against the shooter’s parents.

While some viewed those charges as groundbreaking, others raised serious concerns about the legal theory and its broader implications. At the same time, questions have been raised about the ethics surrounding the handling of the case, including the level of media access granted during an ongoing prosecution and whether the pursuit of national attention overshadowed the responsibility to handle the case with the utmost care and focus on the victims and their families.

Despite their differences, both candidates have made it clear they intend to continue the same approach we have seen from the current administration.

I offer a clear alternative.

I entered this race to restore focus to what the Attorney General’s office is supposed to be: a place where the law is applied fairly, consistently, and without political influence.

As Attorney General, I will make decisions based on the law and the facts, not politics. I will ensure taxpayer dollars are used responsibly. And I will work every day to deliver equal justice under the law for all Michiganders.

When you ask what sets me apart, the answer is simple:

I am a prosecutor, not a political activist.

Thank you for your continued support. Now let’s get to work.
