What We Assume
at Christmas
by Father Casey
We assume that Mary rode a donkey to Bethlehem.
We assume Bethlehem was filled with uncaring innkeepers.
We assume Mary gave birth in a stable.
We assume the star shone overhead that night.
We assume the magi showed up that night, too, and there were three of them.
We assume many things about the Nativity, but the truth is that the Bible doesn’t tell us any of those things. We don’t know how Mary and Joseph traveled to Bethlehem, or where they stayed. We don’t know when the star first began to shine. We don’t know when the magi showed up, or how many there were.
I can’t help but wonder if, instead of helping us enjoy the story, all our assumptions are mostly keeping it encased within a snow globe of sentimentality.
Because quite often, assumptions can become an obstacle to our faith. They do us no good when reading Scripture, and they can also...

Tales of Magi
Our Advent Formation class will conclude this Sunday in the Performance Hall from 10:15am -11:00am. A panel of clergy and scholars are leading this final session of the three-part series. If you missed previous classes you can catch up by viewing them online and you can find the handout from class on the Adult Formation Page. Tales of Magi focuses on how the story of the Magi in Matthew's Gospel has inspired O. Henry, T.S. Elliot, and countless others to retell the story of their quest. This class is designed to spark the imaginations of parishioners of all ages. Join us this Sunday and the next as we follow the Star to the Savior. If you are unable to join in person, you can register below for the Zoom virtual offering.

Taizé for Advent
Too often we get lost in the rush of the holiday season. This Sunday, December 18, at 6:00pm we will gather on the Labyrinth to pause and reflect.
If you are looking for a way to prepare your heart for the birth of Christ, this service of song, prayer and silence patterned after the worship of the Taizé community is the perfect opportunity. Participants will be able to walk the labyrinth, sing and be inspired by the music and silence. Come join us in our quest for the coming Lord

The Longest Night
For many, this season is not filled with sounds of "Joy to the World." For some, this is the first Christmas without someone we love. Others find themselves hurting or still mourning losses from long ago. Wednesday, December 21 at 6:00pm we will gather in the Nave to feel what we feel be it to shed tears and cry out together "How long, O Lord," or to simply breathe deeply in the peaceful company of others. On this, the longest night of the year, come be a part of our service of remembrance, consolation, and assurance.

We will gather in the Parlor on December 31 at 1:00pm to practice our parts and then disperse around town. Register to join in the fun!
